Introduction
The Kamakura Daibutsu , a 13th-century bronze statue of the Buddha Amitābha in Kanagawa Prefecture , Japan
Buddhism , also known as Buddhadharma and Dharmavinaya (transl. "doctrines and disciplines"), is an Indian religion and philosophy based on teachings attributed to the Buddha , a śramaṇa and religious teacher who lived in the 6th or 5th century BCE . It is the world's fourth-largest religion , with about 320 million followers, known as Buddhists , who comprise 4.1% of the global population.
It originated in the eastern Gangetic plain as a śramaṇa movement in the 5th century BCE, and gradually spread throughout much of Asia via Silk Road. Buddhism has since played significant role in Asian culture and spirituality, eventually spreading to the West in the 20th century. (Full article... )

Ushiku Daibutsu (牛久大仏 ) is a statue located in
Ushiku , Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Completed in 1993, it stands a total of 120 metres (390 ft) tall, including the 10 m (33 ft) base and 10 m lotus platform. It held the record for the tallest statue from 1993 to 2008 and as of 2023
[update] , it is the
fifth-tallest statue in the world.
An elevator takes visitors up 85 m (279 ft) to an
observation floor . The statue depicts
Amitabha Buddha and is made of
bronze . It is also known as Ushiku ARCADIA (Amida's Radiance and Compassion Actually Developing and Illuminating Area). It was built to commemorate the birth of
Shinran , founder of the

Image 2 The
Jetavanarama stupa or
Jetavanaramaya (
Sinhala :
ජේතවනාරාමය ,
romanized: jētavanārāmaya ) is a
stupa , or Buddhist reliquary monument, located in the ruins of Jetavana monastery in the
UNESCO world heritage city of
Anuradhapura , Sri Lanka. At 122 metres (400 ft), it was the world's tallest stupa, and the third tallest structure in the world (only behind the two great pyramids:
Great Pyramid of Giza and
Pyramid of Khafre ) when it was built by King
Mahasena of Anuradhapura (273–301). He initiated the construction of the stupa following the destruction of the
Mahaviharaya of Anuradhapura . His son
Kithsirimevan completed the construction of the stupa, and it was renovated by
Parakramabahu I of Polonnaruwa . A part of a belt tied by the
Buddha is believed to be the relic that is enshrined here.
The structure is significant in the island's history as it represents the tensions within the
Theravada and
Mahayana sects of
Buddhism ; it is also significant in recorded history as one of the
tallest structures in the ancient world ; and the tallest non-pyramidal building; the height of the stupa was 122 metres (400 ft), making it the tallest stupa in the ancient world. With the destruction and abandonment of
Anuradhapura kingdom in the 11th century, the stupa with others was covered by jungle. King Parakramabahu in the 12th century tried to renovate this stupa and it was rebuilt to the current height, a reduction from the original height. Today it stands at 71 metres (233 ft).
The compound covers approximately 5.6 hectares and is estimated to have housed 10,000 Buddhist monks. One side of the stupa is 176 m (576 ft) long, and the flights of stairs at each of the four sides of it are 9 m (28 ft) wide. The doorpost to the shrine, which is situated in the courtyard, is 8 m (27 ft) high. The stupa has a 8.5 m (28 ft) deep
foundation , and sits on
bedrock . (

Image 3 Pure Land Buddhism or the
Pure Land School (
Chinese :
淨土宗 ;
pinyin :
Jìngtǔzōng ) is a broad branch of
Mahayana Buddhism focused on achieving rebirth in a
Pure Land . It is one of the most widely practiced traditions of
Buddhism in East Asia . It is also known as the "Lotus School" (
蓮宗 ;
Liánzōng ) in China or the "
Nembutsu school" in Japan. East Asian Pure Land mainly relies on three main
Mahayana scriptures : the
Sutra of Amitayus , the
Contemplation Sutra and the
Amitabha Sutra .
The Pure Land tradition is primarily focused on achieving rebirth in a
Buddha's "
pure land " after death, which are considered to be the superior places to attain full
Buddhahood . Once there, one can meet a Buddha face to face and study under them without any of the distractions or fears of our world. Since it is much easier to attain enlightenment in a pure land, many Mahayana Buddhists strive to be reborn in one. The most popular one today is
Sukhavati ("Land of Bliss"), the pure land of Buddha
Amitābha , though some Buddhists may also aspire to be reborn in other pure lands (such as
Maitreya's and
Medicine Guru 's). Although Buddhas are venerated in Pure Land and are seen as
savior-like figures , the tradition clearly distinguishes itself from
theistic religions, due to its roots in the classic Mahayana understanding of buddhas and
bodhisattvas , as well as the Buddhist doctrines of
emptiness and
mind-only .
The most distinctive feature of East Asian Pure Land traditions is that it offers
ordinary people (even the unlearned and the unethical) hope that they may attain the
stage of non-retrogression and eventually Buddhahood, no matter how bad their
karma may be. In East Asian Pure Land, this is most commonly accomplished through the practice of
mindfulness of the Buddha , i.e.
niànfó (Chinese: 念佛, "Buddha recitation", Japanese:
nenbutsu ) and entails reciting the name of Amitabha (Chinese:
Āmítuófó , Japanese:
Amida ). However, Pure Land Buddhism may also include numerous other practices which are done alongside Buddha recitation, such as keeping
Buddhist precepts , reciting
sutras ,
visualization , and making
offerings . (

Image 4 Tōdai-ji (東大寺 , 'Eastern Great Temple') is a
Buddhist temple complex that was once one of the powerful
Seven Great Temples , located in the city of
Nara , Japan. The construction of the temple was an attempt to imitate Chinese temples from the much-admired
Tang dynasty . Though it was originally founded in the year 738 CE, Tōdai-ji was not opened until the year 752 CE. The temple has undergone several reconstructions, including one initiated by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1181 (entrusted to Chogen, a monk of the Jodo sect) which included the standardization of existing buildings and the strengthening of visible pillars. Since then, one of the most significant reconstruction (that of the Great Buddha Hall) took place in 1709. However, it was on the verge of collapse in the late 19th century due to the weight of its huge roof. The collapse was prevented through a first restoration (1904–1913), and its current appearance was completed using steel framing between 1974 and 1980. Its Great Buddha Hall
(大仏殿 , Daibutsuden ) houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha
Vairocana , known in Japanese as
Daibutsu (
大仏 ). The temple also serves as the Japanese headquarters of the
Kegon school of Buddhism. The temple is a listed UNESCO
World Heritage Site as one of the "
Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara ", together with seven other sites (including temples, shrines and places) in the city of Nara. (

Image 6 Tibetan Buddhist flag Tibetan Buddhism is a form of
Buddhism practiced in
Tibet ,
Bhutan , and
Mongolia . It also has a sizable number of adherents in the areas surrounding the
Himalayas , including the
Indian regions of
Ladakh ,
Darjeeling ,
Sikkim , and
Arunachal Pradesh , as well as in
Nepal . Smaller groups of practitioners can be found in
Central Asia , some regions of
China such as
Northeast China ,
Gansu ,
Yunnan ,
Xinjiang ,
Inner Mongolia and some regions of
Russia , such as
Tuva ,
Buryatia , and
Kalmykia . It was also formerly practiced in the
Baltistan region of
Pakistan .
Tibetan Buddhism evolved as a form of
Mahayana Buddhism stemming from the latest stages of Buddhism (which included many
Vajrayana elements). It thus preserves many Indian Buddhist
tantric practices of the post-
Gupta early medieval period (500–1200 CE), along with numerous native Tibetan developments. In the pre-modern era, Tibetan Buddhism spread outside of Tibet primarily due to the influence of the
Mongol -led
Yuan dynasty , founded by
Kublai Khan , who ruled China, Mongolia, and parts of Siberia. In the Modern era, Tibetan Buddhism has spread outside of Asia because of the efforts of the
Tibetan diaspora (1959 onwards). As the
Dalai Lama escaped to India, the Indian subcontinent is also known for its renaissance of Tibetan Buddhism monasteries, including the rebuilding of the three major monasteries of the
Gelug tradition.
Apart from classical Mahāyāna Buddhist practices like the
ten perfections , Tibetan Buddhism includes tantric practices, such as
deity yoga and the
Six Dharmas of Naropa , as well as methods that are seen as transcending tantra, like
Dzogchen . Its main goal is
Buddhahood . The primary language of scriptural study in this tradition is
classical Tibetan . (

Image 7 Buddhist mandala with Mount Meru shown in the center depicting the terrestrial universe divided into four quadrants each containing oceans and continents with the known world of humans, Jambudvīpa , located in the south alongside three other continents named Pūrvavideha, Aparagodānīya and Uttarakuru . Buddhist cosmology is the description of the shape and evolution of the
Universe according to
Buddhist scriptures and
commentaries .
It consists of a temporal and a spatial cosmology. The temporal cosmology describes the timespan of the creation and dissolvement of alternate universes in different aeons. The spatial
cosmology consists of a vertical cosmology, the various planes of beings, into which beings are reborn due to their merits and development; and a horizontal cosmology, the distribution of these world-systems into an infinite sheet of existential dimensions included in the cycle of samsara. The entire universe is said to be made up of five basic elements of
Earth ,
Water ,
Fire ,
Air and
Space . Buddhist cosmology is also intwined with the belief of
Karma . As a result, some ages are filled with prosperity and peace due to common goodness, whereas other eras are filled with suffering, dishonesty and short lifespans. (

Image 2 Dōgen Zenji (道元禅師 ; Japanese pronunciation: [doꜜː.ɡeɴ, -ŋeɴ] , 26 January 1200 – 22 September 1253) was a Japanese Zen
Buddhist monk ,
writer ,
poet ,
philosopher , and founder of the
Sōtō school of
Zen in
Japan . He is also known as
Dōgen Kigen (
道元希玄 ),
Eihei Dōgen (
永平道元 ),
Kōso Jōyō Daishi (
高祖承陽大師 ), and
Busshō Dentō Kokushi (
仏性伝東国師 ).
Originally ordained as a monk in the
Tendai School in
Kyoto , he was ultimately dissatisfied with its teaching and traveled to
China to seek out what he believed to be a more authentic
Buddhism . He remained there for four years, finally training under
Tiāntóng Rújìng , an eminent teacher of the
Cáodòng lineage of
Chinese Chan .
Upon his return to Japan, Dōgen began promoting the practice of
zazen (sitting meditation) through literary works such as
Fukanzazengi and
Bendōwa . He broke relations with the Tendai School and later left Kyoto amid ongoing tensions with the school. He eventually founded
Eihei-ji , one of the two head temples of the Sōtō school, in present-day
Fukui Prefecture . (

Image 4 Dhammapāla was the name of two or more great
Theravada Buddhist commentators.
The earlier, born in
Kanchipuram , is known to us from both the
Gandhavamsa and
the writings of Xuanzang [citation needed ] to have lived at
Badara Tittha Vihara south of modern
Chennai , and to have written the
commentaries on seven of the shorter
canonical books (consisting almost entirely of verses) and also the commentary on the
Netti , perhaps the oldest
Pali work outside the canon. Extracts from the latter work, and the whole of three out of the seven others, have been published in Pali by the
Pali Text Society . These works show great learning,
exegetical skill and sound judgment. But as to the meaning of words, or to discussions of the
ethical import of his texts, very little can be gathered from his writings of value for the
social history of his time. Though in all probability a
Tamil by birth, he declares, in the opening lines of those of his works that have been edited, that he followed the tradition of the Great Monastery (
Maha Vihara ) at
Anuradhapura in
Sri Lanka , and the works themselves confirm this in every respect.
Another writer, probably also called
Dhammapala , since he was supposed by the 12th century to be the same, though scholars do not accept this, wrote subcommentaries on the commentaries on the
Digha ,
Majjhima and
Samyutta Nikayas . (
