Woolworths New Zealand

[edit]

Recently there was a decision to merge Woolworths New Zealand into Woolworths (New Zealand supermarket chain) due to overlapping content and to maintain consistency with other Woolworth supermarket articles: see Woolworth (disambiguation). I plan to make a start on the merger but would appreciate some guidance and support. I understand many of us would be away at the Wikimedia Conference in Wellington this weekend. Hope it goes well and take care. Andykatib (talk) 21:07, 30 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Icaldonta: for organising the merger. Was busy this week with other things so didn't get round to doing it. Andykatib (talk) 20:34, 7 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, thank you! @Andykatib Icaldonta (talk) 22:51, 8 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Wellington task force launched

[edit]

A Wellington task force was launched today at Wikicon 2026 to invite volunteers to improve articles in particular categories or topic areas related to Wellington City. The initial campaign focusses on articles in the Category:Tourist attractions in Wellington City. Other campaigns will follow. Editors with an interest in topics related to Wellington City are invited to sign up on the task force project page, and then put their username against any article in the current campaign that they are willing to improve._Marshelec (talk) 01:48, 3 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

I just wanted to say that I had a really good time at Wellington WikiCon 2026. It was great to meet so many Wikipedians in person for the first time. I felt very welcome, awkward as I am. The presentations were really interesting and have inspired me. I really enjoyed the Wikizine event and am thinking of making one myself. The tours of Wellington Central Library and the national library were very exciting; I never expected to go into the underground area, which was really fun.

I think the organisers and people who made presentations should be really proud of themselves, and so should the attendees for being good people. I had a really good time. Panamitsu 23:42, 3 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed! It was brilliant to meet heaps of Wikipedians and learn from people's presentations. Well done to everyone, presenters, organisers, and attendees alike. Nice message, Panamitsu. JaumeBG (talk) 00:36, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
yes I agree thanks to everyone who came for being great, kind, and curious people over the weekend! TheLoyalOrder (talk) 01:44, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the kind words Panamitsu, it was great to have you there, we're pleased to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you too JaumeBG and TheLoyalOrder we're very glad you all came along, it's so great to get so many NZ Wikimedians together! -Sophie @ WANZ :-) Hillmenco (talk) 02:08, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
That was a fabulous WikiCon. Thank you to the organisers and attendees who made it such a great event. Meeting you in person, Panamitsu, was one of the highlights for me. Schwede66 08:35, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I have extreme FOMO, would have loved to be there! David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 09:04, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sad that I missed it (I don't even have an excuse - I live here and had very little planned for the weekend, I had just got the timing messed up and thought I was out of town!) Glad to hear it went well, will have to keep an eye out for a future event in town. Turnagra (talk) 09:05, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's very sad, Turnagra. We had a late registration and that person turned up on Sunday late morning! You should have joined us when you realised that you were around. Schwede66 23:25, 7 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Wikicon userbox

This user went to
Wellington WikiCon 2026
and had a great time!

I have made a wikibox like I did last year if anyone wants to use it just put "{{User:TheLoyalOrder/Userbox/Wellington Wikicon 2026}}" on your userpage TheLoyalOrder (talk) 01:50, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! Thank you for that! DrThneed (talk) 02:22, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! This is great. ZoologicalLee (talk) 22:22, 8 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Some recent COI edit requests for your perusal

[edit]

There are a couple of NZ edits requests open at present, and because I'm still feeling the warm fuzzies from Wellington, I've included a couple of Australian ones too, and one that relates to UK/Australia/NZ, in case anyone wants to take a look.

  1. Catherine Manchester
  2. Julia Grace
  3. TNT (magazine)
  4. Translational Research Institute (Australia)
  5. Merrelyn Emery

DrThneed (talk) 02:26, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

First one done! The second is quite a bit more involved and will need a bit of a rewrite before it can be merged in, which I don't have the energy for atm so will pass for now. nil nz 02:43, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant! Thanks for that speedy work Nil NZ. DrThneed (talk) 04:37, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Featured Article — New Zealand topic

[edit]

Today, AxonsArachnida's article Katipō (a New Zealand spider) has been featured on the Main Page as the Featured Article until approx. midday tomorrow. Well done, AxonsArachnida! JaumeBG (talk) 02:00, 5 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

A fabulous article, thanks for your contributions @AxonsArachnida! Chocmilk03 (talk) 01:08, 8 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
On a related note, I'd recommend more people get involved in the FA process. You don't need to do a full review nor be familiar with every MOS page. Simple things like fact-checking sources are important but also can be done by anyone. Traumnovelle (talk) 02:20, 8 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

EduWiki Hub looking for NZers to serve on the EduWiki Board Election Committee

[edit]

The EduWiki Hub is looking for expressions of interest from members of the Aotearoa editing community who would like to serve on the EduWiki Board Election Committee. The hub is working to ensure the committee reflects the diversity of the Wikimedia education community, but they have had very limited responses so far from our region. To allow more time and encourage broader participation, they’ve extended the deadline to 15 May 2026.

The Election Committee will play an important role in supporting a transparent, fair, and well-coordinated board election process. Responsibilities will include any of the following: documentation of the electoral process on meta-wiki, overseeing aspects of the nomination and election process, supporting communication with candidates and voters, and ensuring adherence to agreed election guidelines. Sign up here. Hillmenco (talk) 00:37, 7 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Te Pūkenga category

[edit]

I have a question regarding Category:Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology. Given that the current National-led coalition government has taken steps to disestablish the mega polytechnic and reinstitute the polytechnics as independent entities, should I depopulate that category? At the time of writing, Te Pūkenga consists of just five institutions: NorthTec, Tai Poutini Polytechnic, the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, Whitireia New Zealand and Wellington Institute of Technology (About us. The Government intends for them to leave Te Pukenga by 1 January 2027. We'll also need to update Template:Vocational education in New Zealand and List of public sector organisations in New Zealand to reflect these changes. Wanted to get some advice before I proceed with the category changes. Andykatib (talk) 21:33, 10 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at the list of central government organisations on the Public Service Commission's website and those 16 polytechnics for some reason are still listed as Crown entity subsidiaries of the New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology. Not sure if that is because the list has not been updated or whether they are still legally part of NZIST until its dissolution? Andykatib (talk) 21:44, 10 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting press release from the Government came out yesterday - seems like there will be some changes made to the Copyright Act to extend the copyright for music to 70 years after publication and 70 years after death for other general works. Thoughts? applecuckoo (he/him) 20:36, 26 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Unlikely to have any impact on Wikipedia as anything that could be affected would have had URAA restoration in 1996 anyhow. Traumnovelle (talk) 01:27, 27 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia operates under US copyright law. The major problem is that Commons wants things to be in both US and local public domain. There's a few edge cases where that can't be met (things in the US public domain which are still under copyright here), and that will increase. And it will mean that kiwis can't contribute to wikisource for e.g. the works of Ngaio Marsh, which would come out of US copyright around the same time as they would have become NZ-PD. Latest updates from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand

[edit]

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Wikipedia:WikiCon Aotearoa/Wellington 2026, it was great to see so many familiar and new people — get a summary of the event here. The NZ Politics Taskforce is busy preparing for the general election. A new Wellington Taskforce has been launched. An NZ Wikimedian attended the 2026 Wikimedia Hackathon in Milan and developed a new tool prototype. National Volunteer Week is coming up 14–20 June and WANZ wants to celebrate our editors. Lastly, following our recent AGM we have had some changes on the Board. Ngā mihi! — Sophie from WANZ Hillmenco (talk) 22:26, 1 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article John Badcock (artist) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Tagged for notability concerns for 10 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Poorly sourced BLP. Created by a SPA with only 10 edits, all of this person and his birth place.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.

If the proposed deletion has already been carried out, you may request undeletion of the article at any time. Bearian (talk) 16:23, 18 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see anywhere to discuss this, but a quick search reveals many news articles. I've expanded the article and added sources. Oppose deletion. Wainuiomartian (talk) 19:28, 18 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
With proposed deletions, you can just remove the tag on the article if you oppose the deletion. It's intended as a more streamlined process which avoids the full AFD process for uncontroversial deletions, but also has a much lower bar for stopping the deletion. Turnagra (talk) 19:29, 18 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The exceptions is WP:BLPPROD, which can only be contested if a reliable source is added. Traumnovelle (talk) 01:59, 22 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
aha, thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wainuiomartian (talkcontribs)

Merging Wikidata items

[edit]

Could someone please merge the two items for Janet Davidson: Q15130352 and Q60226241. I'm sure someone can do this more quickly and easily than I can. :) --Gertrude206 (talk) 03:11, 21 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

OK, done! --Canley (talk) 03:52, 21 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

This survived an AfD years ago, but it still needs sources. I'm not familiar enough with New Zealand sources to make educated judgement about reliable sources. Please help by adding some sources. Bearian (talk) 01:50, 22 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The 2007 AFD was no consensus, it'd probably not survive AFD today unless sources are uncovered. Traumnovelle (talk) 01:58, 22 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find much but have just added three ref ideas to the talk page. Panamitsu (talk) 03:12, 22 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Rationalisation of list articles relating to the Royal New Zealand Navy

[edit]

I've been considering a merge of several list articles of the format 'Ship type' ships of the RNZN. This is because we already also have the standard two list articles,List of active Royal New Zealand Navy ships, and List of ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy. With the RNZN being a small navy the list articles by ship type are never going to be bigger than your average stub so this to me is a uncontroversial change. Except I then read Minesweepers of the Royal New Zealand Navy, which is a little more than a list article, having some prose sections as well. The ship classes and individual ship articles are mostly fine and don't need much change.

I'd welcome feedback before I put together a formal merge proposal to get rid of the Ship type list articles? Duncnbiscuit (talk) 07:34, 22 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Duncnbiscuit: I agree that it would be a good idea to merge the List of active Royal New Zealand Navy ships into the List of ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The Minesweepers of the Royal New Zealand Navy article is little bit trickier. That could work as a standalone specialist article. I second the idea of a formal merge proposal for the two lists articles. It makes sense to consolidate them given the small size of our Navy. Andykatib (talk) 03:06, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If the list of current ships is removed there might be a problem for somebody finding a list of current ships (I known to sort the table but casual users might find it hard). Possible link to Royal New Zealand Navy#Current at the top of the article? - - SimonLyall (talk) 06:11, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify. I am not suggesting to merge the active ships article with the all ships article, those separate articles are the standard pattern for most navies on Wikipedia. The articles that I think need merging are Ship Type lists, i.e. Frigates of..., Corvettes of..., Cruisers of.... They are mostly stub size.
I highlighted Minesweepers of as an exception because it was more than a list article. however, I actually think that the extra content of the Minesweeper article could be merged into the ship class or individual ship articles.Duncnbiscuit (talk) 07:25, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Nicola Willis article

[edit]

The Sixth National Government, 2023–present section of the Nicola Willis article reads like a shopping list. It definitely needs some pruning and condensing but thought I would seek help on how to go about it. One idea I have is to merge the various budget sub-sections into one Budgets section. As Minister of Finance, Willis would have oversight over the budgets. Let me know what you think. Andykatib (talk) 03:09, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

big NPOC vio section by a blocked sockpuppet user on her page eesh TheLoyalOrder (talk) 04:33, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It is a pity that Kiwimanic (talk · contribs) has turned out to be a sock puppet of the banned Offender9000 (talk · contribs) from the 2010s. He did write several articles including the Wrongful conviction of David Lyttle, the Seizure of Shaun Allen's farm and the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court, which would now have to be recreated and rewritten by other users. Would it be possible to restore those articles and then rewrite them? Still, I accept that Kiwimanic circumventing a Wikipedia ban is a big no no. Andykatib (talk) 05:37, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's possible. See earlier discussion at Talk:Christopher Luxon#Reverting edits by Kiwimanic. User:Drew Stanley got the New Zealand Drug Foundation article back and has been reworking it at User:Drew Stanley/New Zealand Drug Foundation. Nurg (talk) 10:37, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Nurg:, will get in touch with the admins and ask if they could send me copies of the affected articles which can be recreated as drafts. Have a good evening. Andykatib (talk) 11:51, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Traumnovelle:, given your work on trimming political biographies, I was wondering if you would be able to help with feedback or editing on the Nicola Willis article. We will need to either remove or rewrite content by the banned user Kiwimanic. He wrote a lengthy criticism section focusing on Willis's tenure as Finance Minister. I have added some content about her conflict with the New Zealand Taxpayers' Union in early 2026. Let me know what you think on trimming the Sixth National Government section. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 03:36, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of the content is more pertinent in other articles i.e. the thing for education is more appropriate in Erica Stanford's page than here. I'd also try and do away with headings and have a more coherent timeline. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:20, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Traumnovelle: for the suggestions and the heard start. We could aim to get the article up to the same standard as Christopher Luxon. Andykatib (talk) 06:22, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Longest name

[edit]

Hello my name is Laurence Watkins and I have the longest personal name in the world having 2253 middle names. In 1990 I won a High court case against the Registrar General of Births Deaths and Marriages in the High Court in Wellington which resulted in changes to the law about how many names a person can have and restrictions on having a title included in your name eg Lord Duke King etc. I am in the Guinness World Records and my story has been in many different countries Japan India America Brazil Britain. I was wondering if I was eligible to be included on a Wikipedia entry as there is already a one line post about me when I stood for Mayor of Auckland. kind regards Laurence Watkins Zhongliyun (talk) 00:39, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You asked about this at User talk:Oshwah#Page deleted and got a detailed reply. It's better that you follow up there rather than posting at a different place without the explanation that the article was one you paid for.-Gadfium (talk) 02:05, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I paid for a person to follow the rules and guidelines which they didn’t do so I have been restricted from posting until the end of November and I have certainly learned a valuable lesson about trusting freelancers to follow the rules of Wikipedia but as my post explains I am interested from someone interested in New Zealand history regarding the High Court ruling in 1990 which was a major win and had ramifications because the laws were changed because of it.
