A1: The Kolkata page adheres to summary style, sticking to core topics and skipping excess details. Consider expanding daughter articles, such as History of Kolkata or Economy of Kolkata, instead. To update economy figures or other content, cite credible sources. See WP:RS and WP:V.

A4: Consult the archives of this talk page for discussions regarding the naming of the article. As of February 2012, the last discussion and voting regarding this issue was completed on 31 January 2012, and result of the move request was: No clear consensus to move this title, either name is appropriate for the article and no one made compelling WP:COMMONNAME arguments for either name over the other.

Q5: Why is person "X" not named in the article, although he/she is an accomplished person related to Kolkata?

A5: There is no strict inclusion and exclusion criteria for accomplished personalities mentioned in the article, although a working set of criteria is in the process of development. Some individuals such as Rabindranath Tagore or Mother Teresa are very significantly associated with Kolkata, while there are many others whose contribution or significance may not be as important. The significance level is a matter of subjective analysis, and there is room for discussion for each individual person. The following set of guidelines is recommended. The person need not meet all the criteria.

a. The person should be notable enough to have a separate wiki article.

b. Individual reliable inline secondary citations proving the notability in the Kolkata article must be given.

c. There should be significant contribution to his/her field of expertise.

d. The person received prestigious international or national awards or was nominated.

e. The person is or has been an elected member of a highly selective prestigious scholarly society or association,

f. The person is in a field of literature (e.g writer or poet) or the fine arts (e.g. musician, composer, artist), and meets the standards for notability in that art, such as WP:CREATIVE or WP:MUSIC and his/her work is well recognised as evident from reliable secondary sources.

g. The person must have born, or lived, or studied or worked significantly in Kolkata, that is, the person should be related to Kolkata significantly.

h. The name(s) should be added in such a manner that it should not look like a laundry list, rather it should flow into a prose.

i. Please discuss in the talk page prior to addition of a name. Please see Question a in the FAQ section to be aware that dits can be removed.

Update list of research institutes

The Indian Statistical Institute is a prominent research institute, but it isn't mentioned in the list. It does appear once towards the end of the education section (it should probably be lifted up given its prominence in academia), but not in the research institutes list. I would like to propose adding the following municipal finance information under the Civic Administration section of the article. The information is sourced from the CityFinance Portal of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Proposed text:

As per the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation reported a revenue of ₹4,224 crore (US$507 million) and an expenditure of ₹4,628 crore (US$555 million) in 2022–23. Common name standardization

This article oscillates between "Kolkata" and "Calcutta" frquently, sometimes in the same sentence. Google Trends shows a clear common name preference for Kolkata, as does the article title. I've changed all instances of Calcutta to Kolkata, except in the lead clarification. Obviously I encourage people to revert this and/or leave a reply if they disagree with my rationale. Hello, I would like to propose several factual updates and corrections to this article based on reliable, recent sources. I've structured each request clearly below.

1. Population data – Update to 2026 estimates

The article currently uses 2025 estimates in the infobox (city proper: 6,577,000; metro: 20,534,000). Please update to 2026 estimates:

2. Transport section – Add East–West Metro inauguration (March 2024)

The article does not currently mention the inauguration of India's first underwater metro tunnel, which is a significant milestone for Kolkata. Please add to the Transport / Kolkata Metro subsection:

"On 6 March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Howrah Maidan–Esplanade section of the East–West Metro (Green Line), which includes India's first transportation tunnel under a major river — a 520-metre underwater stretch beneath the Hooghly River. The Howrah Metro station is the deepest metro station in India at 33 metres below ground level."

3. Transport section – Metro network expansion update (2025–2026)

The article does not reflect the ongoing metro expansion. Please add or update the metro section:

"As of 2025–2026, the Kolkata Metro network is undergoing significant expansion. In August 2025, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a 13.61 km stretch including the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar (Airport) section. The network is set to add 19 km by the end of 2026, with the full 32 km Orange Line expected to be commissioned by December 2026, eventually expanding the total network to 130 km."

4. Transport section – Tram service discontinuation

The article currently describes trams as an ongoing unique feature of Kolkata. This is now outdated. The West Bengal government decided in 2024 to discontinue the tram service after 151 years. Please update the relevant tram sentence to:

"Kolkata was historically the only city in India to operate trams; however, in 2024 the West Bengal government announced the discontinuation of tram services after 151 years, retaining only a short heritage stretch from Maidan to Esplanade."

5. Lead paragraph – Minor grammar fix

Current: "Kolkata is the seventh most populous city in India with an estimated city proper population of 4.5 million"

The figure of 4.5 million refers to the 2011 census. The lead should clarify this is the 2011 census figure and note current estimates. Suggested update:

"Kolkata is the seventh most populous city in India, with a 2011 census city proper population of approximately 4.5 million and an estimated population of 6.77 million as of 2026."
