Headlines with URLs to sources only

Your post title must be written in English and be or describe/translate a headline from a (preferably Japanese) news source on a topic germane to Japan. You can “save a click” by putting the most important information in the story into the title, but you cannot insert your own opinion. If the link is in Japanese, add a 日本語 tag. If you paraphrase or translate an article as a text post, ALWAYS PROVIDE A URL TO THE SOURCE.

No “Meta”, Question or “Personal Opinion” text posts

Text posts are permitted for the purpose of providing English translations of Japanese stories or additional information related to stories, but they may not be used for any other reasons. Text posts that give the personal thoughts and opinions of the submitter will be removed. If you want to give your own opinion on a story, put it in the comments.

Avoid Sensationalized Headlines

Social Media sources are not explicitly banned because they occasionally report breaking events that will soon be covered by mainstream news, but we reserve the right to remove posts if the titles are overtly sensationalized. Red flags include hyperbolized statements, words in all caps and exclamation marks (e.g., "Japan's new missiles will DESTROY China's aircraft carriers!!!") Newsworthiness: if the source is good enough for mainstream aggregators like YahooNews.jp, it’s good enough for us.

No Misinformation

Differences in opinion are welcome, especially if valid sources are provided for claims. But comments and links that spread demonstrably false information (e.g., claiming Japan will become a lawless state with a destroyed social order “just like Europe“ if they accept immigration, when in fact crime rates across Europe have generally been dropping for over 20 years) will be deleted and lead to a ban. Provide evidence for inflammatory claims.

Don’t spam petty “foreign crime” stories

Don’t use this sub as a dumping ground for individual“foreign crime” stories, particularly when the crimes are petty and not newsworthy for any other reason. Statistics consistently show foreign crime rates have never been high per capita and have been dropping for decades. If a story about a stolen bicycle or theft under 100,000 yen etc isn’t national news when a native Japanese does it, it’s not newsworthy when a foreign resident does the same thing.

No “Wolf Warrior” Brigading

"Wolf warrior" rhetoric refers to an aggressive, combative style of Chinese diplomacy characterized by vehement, threatening pushback against criticism of the CCP's foreign policy. We reserve the right to ban new users who refer to Japan or its leaders as "dogs", suggest China “teach Japan a lesson”, nuke Japan or otherwise incite war, berate Japan as a “vassal state”, suggest China forcibly “reunify” Taiwan, claim Okinawa is Chinese or any other such aggressive one-sided rhetorical bullying.

No parody, "slice of life" or "wacky Japan" posts

As a general rule of thumb if a story about a wacky, zany trend supposedly taking Japan by storm only seems to appear in the western media but not in any actual Japanese news outlets, it’s probably not real. Japan is a country of 120,000,000, and one or two weird people interviewed by a western journalist do not necessarily make a real trend. Domestic Japanese sources are preferred for cultural commentary.

No commercial spam

Commercial Spam is defined as unsolicited commercial messaging by people trying to use Reddit to advertise their products (Note: this is not a catch-all category for “it doesn’t break any of the other rules, but I don’t like it”. Please do not report articles as “spam“ merely on the grounds that you dislike a Japanese-germane topic or the submitter).

Check article recency before submitting

News articles up to 3 months old are permitted automatically. We may allow articles as old as 6 months under special circumstances if no newer article on the story exists (e.g., a criminal investigation that is still ongoing at the time of the post), but you must use the “3-6 month old article” tag and they will be subject to review.

Avoid low-effort comments

Thoughtful criticisms of public figures and government policies are welcome, but please avoid low-effort insults. Simply criticizing a politician’s physical appearance or intelligence without further explanation does not positively contribute to intelligent discussion of current events.
