Hi everyone. I’m a Canadian student, I’m about to apply to Caribbean med schools (no shot at Canadian med schools) and I wanted to know if anyone has any advice for my situation.

My parents can’t help me pay for my education at all, they also can’t be co-signers for me so I can’t get a LOC. I have no other family in the country (my entire family is in Europe). I have bad credit because I was working throughout undergrad and had to fund my tuition myself and got virtually nothing from OSAP.

Do I have any options at all, is there even a point in applying to the schools?

What apartments or neighborhoods have you had the best experience with? I’m looking for somewhere that’s clean, comfortable, safe, and pet-friendly. I’d love to hear any recommendations (or places to avoid).

We know that Caribbean schools are only after the money and statistically lead to failure. No one in the subreddit encourages students to go to the Caribbean as their first choice. However, continuous anti-Caribbean content serves little purpose to those in the Caribbean trying to succeed.

No Posting Copyrighted Material

Please don't post past CBSE or USMLE questions verbatim. Discussion of topics, is permitted and encouraged. NBME topic discussion from offline and online forums is allowed as long as it is not verbatim.

Bottom line: if it will result in a copyright removal by reddit, it's not allowed to be posted.

Try to be Helpful by adding value to the discussion

Please check if your post/comment adds value to the conversation and helps the OP further address the discussion. Due to the overly hostile and demeaning nature of SDN, any non-helpful posts/comments will be removed.

For example saying "XYZ school sucks" will result in removal. But saying "XYZ school is a not a good choice because of reason(s) 1,2,3" is welcome and encouraged.

No Doxxing. If you know someone's real identity, please do not dox them on the subreddit or to your school's administration. When referring to faculty, please use their titles instead of real names. For example, instead of Barack Obama, say former President of America.

Avoid Hysterical Rants. Don't spam posts or comments.

Many students fail out of Caribbean schools and come on this subreddit to rant. Saying stuff like “the school kicked me out for no reason” will be removed because there is always a reason.

Always post the full story to the best of your extent in these situations. Did you fail any classes? Were there any professional issues? Did you take multiple LOAs? Etc…

Statistics and data can’t be blatantly unfounded

Every Caribbean schools lies about their stats. Don’t perpetuate those lies. Don’t post information that you don’t know. You can guess but state that it’s your guess.
