Merging with Running Stitch

Merging over running stitch to here, since they're essentially the same thing. Once I clean up the merged material, I'll add more about what small differences there are, and probably a note on how most people consider them to be the same?

The distinction between running and straight stitch?

The article says:

Running stitch will never be used to refer to a single stitch since a single running stitch is a straight stitch.

But this leaves me confused as to what a running stitch actually is? Like the way the article reads to me is "a running stitch is a straight stitch but a straight stitch is not a running stitch" or something along these lines. I know literally nothing about stitching (hence my visit to this page) and so I found this confusing and I'm confusing myself more every time I try to read this sentence. Can somebody who knows this topic add a little clarity in the form of "As opposed to a straight stitch, a running stitch ______" or something along those lines? TIA!
