All citations I've found for the quote "I believe I told you he would not steal a red hot stove. I will now take that back" in the conversation between Thaddeus and Lincoln point to a chapter [Thaddeus Stevens by McCall, Samuel W.(Samuel Walker)Publication date 1899 p.311-312] entitled "WIT AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS." I've checked all attributions of various notes in that chapter and have yet to find a proper reference for any of the quoted anecdotes. Book can be found here: https://archive.org/details/thaddeusstevens00inmcca/page/310/mode/2up

Agreed. I found references to the Stevens, Cameron and the "red hot stove" as early as 1862 via Newspapers.com. But the first newspaper reference to the follow up "take that back" was from 1899.Billmckern (talk) 20:39, 15 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We mention it is likely apocryphal.and do not present it as true. The original comment in this thread, I believe, was made before the article was renovated over the past two years. Wehwalt (talk) 21:47, 15 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

[edit]

The pictures currently in this article seem to me to be a bit interchangeable. It might be better to drop one and use this Joseph Keppler caricature at the time of his resignation from the U.S. Senate. But I leave it to someone else to make the call. - Jmabel | Talk 00:30, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. They look similar. I'd replace the last one with that picture. PRhyu 13:22, 16 October 2007 (UTC) ...................................... I tried to remove a link in 'references' to a quote site which is a domain for sale only. I am such a dimwit that the only thing I can do is let you know here.164.215.0.189 (talk) 16:59, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
