Request for Semi-Protection

[edit]

This article has been frequently vandalized by anonymous IP users, particularly with misinformation and disruptive edits. Due to the ongoing issues, I propose semi-protection to prevent further disruption and ensure that only autoconfirmed users can edit the page. The vandalism has occurred in the past few days, and it is likely to continue unless protection is applied. En.saravanan (talk) 06:38, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Notable peoples

[edit]

World chess champion Vishwanathan Anand's birthplace is this place. This needs a proper mention. Would call fellow editors to make this important edit. Regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.101.101.224 (talk) 03:10, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mentions updates as per wikipedia standards. En.saravanan (talk) 05:31, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Map wrongly labeled

[edit]

The map shows Chennai in the middle of Tamil Nadu, which is clearly wrong. Could somebody please edit the image file? I would, but I don't have the knowhow. Gokul Madhavan 14:54, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

It's done. -- Ganeshk (talk) 15:30, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nidur-Neivasal

[edit]

Nidur Neivasl is a village, three kilometres from Mayiladuthurai town. Nidur Neivasal is a name of two villages, which are Nidur and Neivasal. The local people formally call these two villages as Nidur only. Nidur famous because of the Arabic College named Jamia Misbahul Hudha. Among the population 90% of the people Muslims and other people are mostly Hindus and Christians. There are Five Masjids, Two Temples and One Church is there in this village. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Onlinemansur (talkcontribs) 17:47, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to quick-fail this article. There are too many unsourced sentences (see Etymology, Administration and politics, and Culture sections (which all have unsourced sentences), as well as Notable people, (which is almost entirely unsourced)).

Additionally, there are many grammar issues; a quick scan gives examples such as "The Notable [sic] colleges in the area...", "Muzhukku every year in October...", etc. and other listing and tone problems; I recommend requesting a copyedit from the Guild of Copy Editors before re-nominating, which would significantly benefit this article.

I understand this is disappointing, and I apologies for the big wait. Thanks for the work you've done on this, GA or not. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions on the article talk page with a ping to me or on my personal talk. Best, GoldRomean (talk) 03:09, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I'll be reviewing this article using the template below. If you have any questions, ask them here. It may take me a few days to complete my initial runthrough, but don't hesitate to respond to issues as I mention them below. —Ganesha811 (talk) 18:06, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is a long article and I'm looking at the prior review as well, but I should be done with my first pass in the next 3 days. —Ganesha811 (talk) 16:07, 4 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I want to apologize for the slow review - I will complete my review this weekend. —Ganesha811 (talk) 22:47, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No issues. I always thank you for your time and interest in this article. E.Saravanan (talk) 05:17, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ganesha811, I'm improvising the citation as mentioned in your comments under item 2b. I have noticed that most of the dead links are geo-restricted outside India, and these links are working fine within India.
For example, Citation #5 from Elections Tamil Nadu can be accessed normally from an Indian IP, and people outside India can access it using a VPN connected to an Indian IP. Please help and advise whether I should mark it as dead or leave it as it is. E.Saravanan (talk) 05:55, 25 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, good question. I would use the postscript parameter in Template:Cite web and add a postscript to those URLs as follows: . Note: URL may not function correctly if accessed from outside of India. Adjust the wording as you think best. —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:19, 25 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the valuable idea, Much appreciated! E.Saravanan (talk) 05:13, 26 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

This article now meets the GA standard. Thanks to the nominator for their hard work. It's not close to FA standard yet, but it is at the GA criteria. I encourage further improvements and work before making further nominations with regards to this article, but congrats on this accomplishment! —Ganesha811 (talk) 18:05, 13 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct.
  • The town is located at 11.10°N 79.65°E. this sentence can be removed, it's incorrectly formatted and not necessary.
  • There are a number of pieces of information that are outdated need updating. I understand 2011 was the most recent census, but if there is more recent demographic information, that would be helpful. There are also mentions of several projects "due to complete in 2024" or 2025 or similar without reference to whether they were finished. Please go through and check for the most recent information, and where specific "ongoing" projects are mentioned, check if they have been completed and if we can include an update from reliable sources. —Ganesha811 (talk) 18:13, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
    • Estimated population for fy 2026 has been included with a cite. Updates on project status and recently added projects are also added with sources. Further, I had created a para for the Pallavas and Pandyas in the History section, which was not included in the earlier revision. I apologize for this and kindly request you to consider. E.Saravanan (talk) 16:31, 11 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please reorganize the "Notable people" section so that each person gets an individual bullet point, and each entry makes clear the person's connection to Mayiladuthurai.
    • Rearranged the Notable people section to individual bullet points with cite. Common note has also been added at the top “Born or Based in Mayiladuthurai.” Please let me know your comments or suggestions if any. E.Saravanan (talk) 08:39, 12 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • Issues addressed, pass.
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.
  • Pass, no issues.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
  • The references in these two sentences in 'Culture' are misplaced:
    • Mayiladuthurai has several ancient temples, such as Mayuranathaswami Temple, a prominent Shaivite shrine and Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple, a Vaishnavite shrine which are located in the city.
    • The prominent Vaishnava temples in the town are Parimala Rangnathar Vishnu Temple of lord Vishnu at Thiruvilandur on the northern banks of the Cauvery, a Divya desam, a Pancha rangam, Adhi Ranganathar Temple, and Kolikutti Vanamutti Perumal Temple.
  • This entry is unsourced: G. N. Balasubramaniam – A Carnatic vocalist, known for his contribution to classical music.
  • Issues addressed, pass.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose).
  • The first cite, IndiaRailInfo, appears to be dead, though the archive is working. It also appears to be a hobbyist site. What indicates that it's reliable?
  • What indicates that constructionworld.in is reliable? Seems an odd source for the type of municipality.
  • The link to dtNext.in in cite #4 is generic and redirects to the home page. The archive link works, however. The original link should be fixed or marked as dead.
  • Cite #5, from Elections Tamil Nadu, the original link appears to be dead. Should be fixed or marked as dead.
  • "Government of Tamil Nadu - Mayiladuthurai District Website." is this a reliable source? Seems boosterish.
  • Cite #9, the tripod site - again the original link appears to be dead. What indicates that this is a reliable source?
  • In general, many of the original links appear to be dead. This is not a problem necessarily if the archive exists and works, but please do try to either fix the original links or mark them as dead. I'm not going to comment on every one from this point forward, but let me know when you've addressed them all. Thanks.
  • "Sree Varshini" - was this book self-published? Is it a reliable source?
  • For #23, "K. 1974" shouldn't it be "Chockalingam 1974"?
    • Noted and updated.
  • #34, 35, 36, etc are labeled "Urban Infrastructure Report", but the main cite and the report itself are called something different, not "Urban Infrastructure Report". Adjust.
  • #52 "Economic and political weekly 1995, p. 2396" What is this source? It doesn't link anywhere.
  • In general, having checked the first 55 cites of 165, there are consistent issues. Some sources are of unknown or questionable reliability, there are a lot of unmarked dead links, and the formatting is inconsistent. Please go through these and the rest of the cites thoroughly and make improvements. Without solid sourcing, the article won't be able to pass GA, unfortunately.
  • Checking again.
    • I'm still updating the cite. I hope to complete it by today or tomorrow and will let you know once they are ready for your review. E.Saravanan (talk) 04:35, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
      • I have updated the citations as per the comments above. Please review and let me know if you have any further comments. Thank you for your time and input. E.Saravanan (talk)
  • Issues addressed, pass.
2c. it contains no original research.
  • Removed some instances of promotional language / possible OR during first prose review - sounded a bit like a brochure in places. Will check again.
  • No WP:OR found.
2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
  • Not able to find much else available. Typical Indian mid-size town.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).
  • Pass, no major issues of excessive detail. Prose review removed a few extraneous bits.
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
  • Prose review removed some egregious "ad-brochure" phrasing. No major issues.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
  • No issues with stability.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.
7. Overall assessment.
