As far as I know patrons were still largely a very different case because they weren't funding artist to sell their art. The art itself was the point. Nowadays, the people with money need to be convinced that the art will make them more money. The closest thing to an IRL patron that I know of is the son of Nike's owner putting so much support into a claymation studio (Laika iirc)

There actually is this very interesting bit of them reflecting on that in this article. Kinda heartwarming to think that your cringe self can still be something of worth to others.
That takes me to the one bittersweet element of VA-11 Hall-A. It is a portrait frozen in time of who I was and who we all were at that point in time. I don’t dislike the writing in VA-11 Hall-A, if anything I’m shocked at how much of it still makes me giggle, but replaying it I can see the me of that time and his inner turmoil, it’s like looking at old photos of me and I can’t stand to see myself because the tension in my face is unbearable. So the fact that THAT version of me made something that still makes people feel so many things to this day is as shocking as it is a relief.
I love the idea, but it clearly isn't what the show has built thus far, and if it was, it would be a case of media doing a "resistance is as bad as oppression" BS. My hope that is that there are people who actively oppose or don't follow some magic laws without them being BH or there being multiple organizations and not just one vs the other
