About / Moderation

This post is to briefly share some more information about what I do on Reddit. I saw saw another mod do something like this, and I thought it was neat.

Moderation needs for subreddits vary by team size, community activity, and tooling/design/purpose of the subreddit. A lot of people ask how is it possible to keep up with each one, but several subreddits are extensions of the same fandom/community, and my role in others is not always to cover everything.

This table can be sorted by column if you use old reddit on desktop and have Reddit Enhancement Suite installed.

I also assist with the AutoModerator config at r/tomorrow (eg, Jury Duty). I have helped other subreddits with their configs by request. I browse r/AutoModerator often to answer questions there.

I also help out at the Reddit Mods Discord Server.

Feel free to ask me questions about general moderation tools/theory or about my experience as a moderator. But for questions regarding specific moderation situations (eg, content removals or bans), please send a modmail to the relevant subreddit instead.

Other recommended communities:

  • r/AskModerators - A community for non-mods to ask general questions to moderators.

  • r/modguide - A community for peer-written resources for moderation.

  • r/ModSupport - An official (Admin-operated) subreddit for mods to ask questions about moderation / tools / bugs / feedback.

FAQ

  • How to say my username? It's pronounced "Sɛf-ɘrd-sɤn". Seph for short.

  • Why do you moderate? I moderate these communities because I enjoy them, and I want others to enjoy these communities too. I started moderating with r/ZeldaTabletop because I was inspired by the community at r/PokemonTabletop, and I wanted other players to be able to share and find resources for the niche hobby. From there I was able to learn the mod tools and help out in other places.

  • Do you get paid? I do not get paid to moderate, and refuse gifts from 3rd parties when offered. Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct does not fully forbid gifts to moderators, but I feel that it's best to avoid potential biases or apparent conflicts of interest, per the older Moddiquette and Reddiquette. If a creator makes something I am personally interested in, I will purchase it personally, just like anyone else. If a creator wants to give something away in gratitude, I recommend they give it away to the community (for example) instead of to the moderators.

  • How do you have the time to moderate? I check queues and modmail about 3 times a day (when i wake up, lunch break, when i go to sleep) for about 15-30 minutes, when I check other messages / emails, and so on. And then there's downtime while at work and I'm just waiting on samples to run (eg, most days i have to run a 3-minute test every 15 minutes for 4 hours). That's where most of my time comes from.

Something worth noting is that the mechanism of time travel and the point of travel are not the same between the adventure and the ending in Ocarina of Time:

* During the adventure, young link pulls the sword after Zelda has left Hyrule Castle. Adult Link is able to return to the child era by placing the sword back into the pedestal.

* At the end of the game, Adult Zelda uses the Ocarina of Time to send Adult Link back to a point before Child Zelda had left Hyrule Castle.

The ending creates a different timeline for the Child era, likely because the sequence which causes the first junction is changed.

There's a secondary setting with restricted subreddits that can restrict who can comment. Have a second account who is neither a moderator nor approved user test it out to make sure you have it set how you want it.

When I get over a dozen posts in the same day or week asking the same kind of closed question, it's time to make a post with the answer(s).

This really cuts down on Reposts. And cuts the number of Reposts showing up in modqueue from user reports. And cuts the number of people complaining about Reposts in comments and modmail. And cuts the number of people making posts mocking the Reposts.

It's a bit of an anti-short-term-engagement strategy, but it helps maintain a longer-term community health. The key is knowing your audience in the subreddit wants the information on the subreddit without having to see it over and over again.

> Preview image for highlights

* Generally, this is pulled from the direct link or first external link in the text body of the post. My suggestion is to play around with it in a test subreddit.

> Other highlight slots assignment / direct links

* These are not currently available.

> Compact and Sort By user preferences not persistent

* Not sure, but you might report that over on r/bugs

> Space Distribution and Table Rendering not consistent between opening a post vs opening a comment

* Another good thing to post to r/bugs. I do notice that similar issues affect me when opening a post or comment from modqueue.

> Markdown Headings

* Multi-level subheadings actually were dropped with new-reddit back around 2018. The sh.reddit (2024) behavior is consistent with the previous new.reddit behavior in that neither of them show subheadings like old.reddit does

> Wiki Markdown

* The workaround i use for subreddits with redundant wiki systems is to edit the old wiki page with markdown, then copy the **rendered** old wiki page and paste that into the **editor** on the new wiki counterpart. This carries over most of the formatting.

> Delete wiki pages

* not possible. The closest you can do is delist them or turn them mod-only (private). Otherwise, you can consider emptying the content of the page except for linking to other relevant / replacement wiki pages.

> Wiki pages that don't exist

* this really isn't distinguishable without visiting the page. On old reddit, you can see all of the listed wiki pages (ie, pages that have not been *de-listed*) at https://old.reddit.com/r/yoursubredditnamehere/wiki/pages . This does not have a counterpart on sh.reddit, except for the wiki navigation pane on the side.

Admins generally allow people to create new accounts so long as the new accounts do not continue to violate sitewide rules.

If the old [suspended] account was banned in one of your subreddits and the new account is participating now, you can report that for subreddit ban evasion.
