Inspired by the Rossi tennis court drama, I figured I’d submit my own grievances with people abusing San Francisco’s public tennis courts.
In theory, the Potrero Hill recreation center has two publicly reservable tennis courts via SF Rec and Parks. In reality, it is almost impossible to book these courts on weekday mornings before and after work. At 12pm, when reservations open, these times would be booked instantly, every single time. This is not a new problem in San Francisco - like any scarce resource these days, court reservations are plagued with bots that claim courts with inhuman speed. What is new here is that instead of using the courts as intended for recreational play, “coach” Andrew Chang is monetizing these botted public court reservations to sell classes on . For $5 per court per hour, Andrew makes ~$30-$40 per student, while other residents are unable to use the courts recreationally.
It’s one thing for the city to offer group classes to residents on these courts, but it’s another for a private individual to block out other residents for their own monetary gain. Please help me get the attention of SF Rec and Parks by emailing about this situation.
