Vocab & Use of the Language

I looked it up and it means messy, unkempt, long hair. I(m36) have messy, course long hair style.

I went to pick up the order and a worker to the side gets the to go guys attention that I’m there by saying, “what’s up greña to me.

I don’t respond because I don’t know what that means. But I see this dude exchange some smiles and giggles with a cook in the back, at which point I say hey man what did you just say to me.

He says, “greña. It means long hair” and seems to be very nice me, like he’s laughing with me. I just go okay man.

But looking it up seeing what it means, combined with how he said it, saying what’s up greña to me, a gringo, who likely doesn’t speak Spanish, and not explaining it and having the laugh with the guy in the back. Just seems like I’m getting mocked.

Bay area US btw

Why is understanding spoken Spanish SO much harder than reading it?
Why is understanding spoken Spanish SO much harder than reading it?
Study & Teaching Advice

Genuine question for people further along than me. I'm around A2-B1. I can read news articles, I can pass written quizzes, I can slowly construct sentences. I have a 1678 day streak on Duolingo... But oftentimes the second someone talks to me at normal speed I'm completely lost. I know the words on paper but my ears can't keep up.

For those who broke through this: what actually worked? Was it just volume of listening? Specific kinds of content? Shadowing? I'm genuinely trying to figure out the most efficient path and there's so much conflicting advice. Do I need to move to a Spanish speaking country for immersion...
