Open-Source Preferable

We generally prefer open source software as we value code transparency. Closed-source software may be discussed if they offer privacy advantages not present in competing open-source projects, if they are core operating system components, or if you are seeking privacy-focused alternatives. Contact the mod team if you're in doubt, and remember our rules regarding self-promotion always apply.

Self promotion

Reddit is not the place to ask for listing on our website. Please open a thread on our forum for that.

If you want to bring up your project for discussion in our subreddit, you must follow the same guidelines in our developer submission requirement.

No soliciting engagement

Do not ask our community to star, like, up vote, subscribe. This also includes attempts to repeatedly push traffic to personal or other marketing websites or use affiliate links or codes.

We do permit developers to raise awareness about their project and to answer questions from the community. We do not allow fire and forget spamming and advertising. We prefer you disclose your affiliation with your project.

Please also mention the evaluation status with Privacy Guides if not listed.

Surveys, Fundraising, and Petitions

All surveys, fundraising, and petitions must be approved by the Moderators before submission.

Be civil, no violence, hate speech

Try to assume posts are made in good faith first. If someone mistakes a mistake or doesn't understand something, try to explain.

Don’t suggest violence or destruction as a means to an end. Hate speech, doxxing, trolling or baiting won’t be tolerated.

Topic Already Covered

Before posting, check that a discussion has not already been started. Use the search function and/or check new submissions.

Exceptions to this rule are if a topic was discussed long ago, or there was no final conclusion or verdict.

Posting News

We only allow news related to privacy, security or privacy/security related projects. When linking news articles or announcements, try to link the original source of information and do not use editorialized titles.

Non-privacy related news, including general political beliefs, investment news, etc are prohibited.

Meme/Image/Video Posts

Infographics or conference talks with information related to privacy and security are permitted. E.g. from reputable sources such as EFF, DEFCON, Black Hat, CCC, FOSDEM etc. We do not allow "social media personalities" without express permission as those vary significantly in quality and accuracy.

Memes and irrelevant images that can be summarized with text explanations are not to be posted.

No help vampires

This is not a tech support subreddit. Questions related to privacy, security or privacy/security related software and their configurations are acceptable. Don't be a help vampire.

No misinformation

Terms such as "backdoor" and "spyware" should only be used to refer to malicious code, not general diagnostic telemetry.

When making a claim that a certain piece of software is malicious or that certain telemetry data is privacy invasive, explain in detail what is collected and how it collected. Claims of this nature must be backed by technical evidence.

Discussions about about technical limitations of products, and how they may be generally exploited are allowed.

VPNs and cryptocurrencies

Technical discussions about VPN and cryptocurrency technologies such as protocols and methods used to provide privacy are permitted.

Promotion of VPN providers, coins, cryptocurrency exchanges and discussion of non-privacy related topics such as price speculations, NFTs, investment opportunities, etc are forbidden. We are a platform for privacy and security, not financial advice.

Other guides

General guides or software lists are not permitted.

Original sources and research about specific topics are allowed as long as they are high quality and factual.

We are not providing a platform for poorly-vetted, out-of-date or conflicting recommendations.
