Be civil! No personal attacks

We use respectful language here. It’s a necessary framework for tackling controversial topics.

Trolling, insults, and ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated. Criticize actions and policies, not anyone’s personal qualities or worth as a human being.

Posts must directly relate to Oakland

If there’s not a direct connection to Oakland and/or Alameda County, don’t post it here. Posts on vague or general topics—even with disclaimers like “we should do this here”—serve to dilute our community focus.

No sensationalism/toxic negativity

We don’t flinch from addressing the problems facing Oakland, but we also don’t tolerate the exploitation of those problems. Sensationalism and toxic negativity aren’t welcome here. Language that's dismissive (“Oakland is a hellhole”) or defeatist (“What do you expect? It’s Oakland.”) doesn’t move us towards solutions.

Hate speech, misinformation and disinformation

Hate speech of any kind leads to a swift ban. You've been warned.

Posting rumors, false allegations, or other intentional misinformation or disinformation is also grounds for deletion/banning. Use reliable sources, and be willing to acknowledge factual errors when they’re pointed out.

No gatekeeping

Everyone who lives in Oakland (or has a personal connection here) has a right to contribute. Attempts to invalidate someone’s point of view by copping a more-Oakland-than-thou attitude will be deleted. Every part of our city is the “real” Oakland.

No posts about being banned/censored in other subreddits

It’s a violation of Reddit’s site-wide rules for one subreddit to spotlight and amplify anger about another subreddit. If you’ve been banned/censored in the “other” sub (i.e., r/Oakland), you can mention that in the context of discussion, but that can’t be the subject of a post itself.

No Spam/commercial posts

We can’t accept listings of items for sale or trade, or unsolicited promotion of a business. We will, however, allow notifications of performances (music/theater/comedy, etc), sports and community events, so long as content is in good taste, posting is not excessive, and the event is open to the public.

No paywalled/copyrighted content

Reddit frowns upon paywalled content copy-pasted into the comment section. Respect these wishes and refrain from posting copyrighted content. Quotations not exceeding 250 words in length are generally considered acceptable, however.

No fundraising links or shortened links

We can’t host direct links to fundraisers, because it’s not always possible to determine if the fundraiser is legit and/or approved of by the purported recipient.

Likewise, link shorteners aren't allowed, as they can be deceptive and redirect to another location. Please post with an original, verifiable URL.

You’re not being censored. You’re just being a jerk.

If you repeatedly ignore any or all of the above, you and/or your content will be booted. That’s not “censorship”, that’s you being a jerk. Manners and standards are guide rails for free expression; maintaining them maintains the integrity and reputation of this forum for everyone.
