Photographer transitioning into videography/cinematography. What kind of gear should I get to help myself?
Photographer transitioning into videography/cinematography. What kind of gear should I get to help myself?
Question

I’ve been doing photography for 6 years and I’m interested in getting into videography/cinematography. Not necessarily doing corporate or event videography, but more creative and film stuff.

I’m interested but buying some gear to help support myself in learning cinematography, but I’m not sure what is best to get first.

I have a Nikon Z7II. It’s not a cinema camera but it’s decent for both photo and video. I have a wide range of lenses already (both prime and zoom).

I was looking at buying a gimbal at first, but after thinking about it I realized that the type of videos I want to make won’t necessarily need smooth and steady hand held footage. A tripod (which I have already, not a fluid head though) or hand held footage would work for the type of things I’m looking to make.

I was also looking at getting a monitor, camera cage, and side handles, but I’ve read so many things online that I’m not really sure what a good first step is that will actually help me.

I would really appreciate any recommendations or advice on what gear I should get, both gear type and brands (I’m a recent graphic design grad so budget friend gear would be great but I’m definitely open to investing in a nice piece of gear).

Any online learning resources would be appreciated too!
