Please read the Beginner's Walkthrough in the wiki before posting for the first time

The wiki answers many common questions. If a topic is discussed in the wiki, please post follow up questions to the weekly beginner's thread.

User flair is required for all new posts

We require everyone to fill in their user flair (the tags next to everyone's usernames) with information about their general location, climate, and experience level in order to post. This information is almost always relevant, and having it available allows us to give more specific good advice and avoid either making incorrect assumptions or having to ask for this information constantly. No flair is required to comment in the weekly questions threads, but it is encouraged.

Beginner's questions should be posted in the weekly beginner's thread

To reduce clutter in the sub feed and collect questions into one place where they're easy to find, beginner's questions and questions with straightforward answers that don't provoke meaningful discussion should be posted in the weekly beginner's thread, which is always one of the stickied posts.

ALWAYS post photos of your trees when asking questions

Photos are almost always needed to answer your questions. They convey far more information far more accurately than a simple description, including a lot of stuff you may not have thought was important.

Provide and accept critique and feedback

One of the main goals of this sub is be a place for constructive critique and feedback. Those giving critique should try to add value to the conversation and aim to improve your fellow growers skills, while those receiving it should do so graciously.

Don't be a jerk

Our community is based on mutual respect, and comments that violate this will be removed. No personal insults. Constructive debate is good; name calling is not. If someone is turning a discussion into an argument, it's best to just report it and move on rather than continuing to engage with them.

Posts should be kept on the topic of bonsai

This is a sub about bonsai. Non-bonsai-related posts will be removed.

This rule may cover posts of content that may superficially resemble bonsai to the general public, but aren't really related bonsai or have more appropriate subreddits such as r/houseplants, r/gardening, r/succulents, r/niwaki, etc. The mods may deem most LEGO posts or wire art posts off topic or in some cases spam.

Closely-related arts and crafts such as kusamono, accent plants, suiseki, etc, are typically on topic.

Hate has no place here

Harassment on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sex, sexual preference, age, etc is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
