Baker Tilly PIP or Severance
Baker Tilly PIP or Severance
Advice

This morning I got up around 8 AM and saw I had a call scheduled with a Partner. I joined the call, and he was on with HR. Right away they told me I had two options: either go on a 30-day PIP or take a severance package worth about 40 days of pay.

What caught me off guard was that they said this was due to performance issues. The problem is that just a couple of weeks ago, during my review, my manager told me I was performing as expected. There was no indication that I was in danger of being fired, no formal warnings, and no discussion that my performance was seriously deficient.

During today’s call, they also explained the expectations of the PIP, and honestly they don’t seem realistic. It felt like even they knew the metrics would be extremely difficult to hit in only 30 days. They also told me I have until tomorrow to make a decision.

I talked to a manager and few seniors on my team and they were shocked since the team hadn’t been informed about that.

So now I’m wondering:

Does this actually sound like a performance-related termination?

If you were in my shoes, would you take the 4 week severance or try the 30-day PIP?

I’m still trying to process everything because today’s conversation felt completely different from the feedback I received just a few weeks ago.

Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated.
