Welcome to the Wikiproject College baseball talk page. Please discuss all college baseball issues here.

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. Ongoing projects in College Baseball

The postseason coaching carousel is winding down and we're finalizing 2019 pages. While you continue to work on these during the offseason, we hope you'll also consider helping us with projects of broader and historical interest. Many of these projects have navboxes with redlinks that need to be filled in. Some of our biggest needs are listed below. Please help us expand coverage of College Baseball!

CWS participants

Many editors (most notably Mizzou415 Billcasey905 and DMC511) have helped us to start season pages for CWS Champions and runners up. Our next effort will be to create season pages for each CWS participant. This will be a heavier lift, of course, so please see the table below for remaining CWS season pages needed and adopt a program:

We are trying to create a page for each Division I baseball venue. We have run into issues with notability of stadiums housing small programs, so please ensure you create an article citing independent sources - not just the program's web page. An easy place to find this is newspaper articles covering renovations, upgrades, and tournaments. Conferences not listed below are complete.

Conference Tournaments

Create a page for each season of active conference tournaments. Not all conferences have a navbox for their tournament yet. Feel free to create one if you wish to fill it in. Those with a navbox are linked below with the number of redlinks, those without a navbox link to the tournament page. Looking for years your team won? Check the main page of each tournament for a listing by school. Completed conferences (ACC, America East, American, Big 12, Big East, Big South, Big Ten, Big West, C-USA, MAAC, MAC, Mtn. West, NEC, Patriot, SEC, SoCon, WCC) are not included, nor is the Pac-12, which does not hold a tournament.

All-America Teams

There was a discussion back in 2012 of which selectors should be included in the College Baseball All-America Team articles. By the consensus back in 2012, there was a general agreement to use these 4 selectors. For years with 2 selectors, anyone on either lists makes it into the navbox. With 3 selectors, a player must appear twice, and with 4 selectors, a player must be on 3 lists. Since 2012, we've seen:

  • Sites like Perfect Game and D1Baseball also name All-Americans, and those teams get attention from schools, just looking around on Google and social media. D1Baseball in particular comes up a lot.
    • Perfect Game goes back to at least 2011: [1]. I couldn't find any for 2010 or earlier.
    • D1Baseball goes back to at least 2015, although some of the earlier ones are behind a paywall. [2]
  • Only Collegiate Baseball named a team in 2020.
  • Collegiate Baseball shut down in November 2023, leaving us with only 4 selectors.

From the best I can tell (and we also came to this conclusion in 2012), the NCAA doesn't name its own official list of "consensus" All-Americans, but that term is commonly used by the media, so we chose the standards above. However, the most recent list of All-Americans from an official NCAA source is this one from 2013: [3], which only includes the 4 from the chart above.

Assuming we don't have a more recent "official" list from the NCAA since 2013 of which are official and which aren't, I recommend adding D1Baseball and Perfect Game, and recalculating the "consensus" accordingly. Thoughts? Jhn31 (talk) 02:48, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've been away for a while and am still only sporadically active, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I agree that with Collegiate Baseball's closure, we should add D1Baseball for certain and probably Perfect Game too. D1Baseball seems to have taken the mantle from Collegiate Baseball from many years ago, and seems to be the standard in covering the game. PerfectGame felt like it was primarily useful for recruiting and draft prep in the early years, but has definitely expanded their coverage as well. With four selectors, I'd define consensus as 3 selectors choosing the same player, with 5 I'm less sure on whether to stick with 3 or require 4. I guess put me down for 4, but I could be swayed. I sampled through several school's media guides, and it seems like they all include D1Baseball and Perfect Game among their All-America selectors. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]
Many of them also include the College Baseball Foundation All-Americans since 2019. I'm not sure if the others are intentionally excluding this one or just happen to have not had any since then. Examples: 2019 2021 2022 etc.
So what to use for the "consensus" designation? I still can't find any official definition, but that term is used pretty often in media releases by schools, often with whatever definition looks good for their own players. Sometimes a player is a "consensus" All-American if he is on multiple lists, even if it's just 2nd or 3rd team! So I think the best approach is to look at how many players would be included as "consensus":
Currently for 2023, 15 of the 32 players meet the 3/4 standard. If we add D1B and PG, 13 will meet the 5/6 standard, or 17 will meet the 4/6 standard. Or if we also include the CBF, it will be 10 players with 6/7, 14 with 5/7 and 19 with 4/7.
Tommy White and Cade Denton meet 3/4 currently, but were not on the D1B or CBF 1st team lists. They are still listed as "consensus" All-Americans with their own universities: [14] [15]
Currently for 2024, 18 of 30 players meet the 2/3 standard. If we add D1B and PG, 13 will meet the 4/5 standard and 17 will meet the 3/5 standard. If we also include CBF, 11 will meet the 5/6 standard and 15 will meet the 4/6 standard.
So with all of that compiled, I think there is very strong reason to add D1Baseball and Perfect Game. I think CBF is up in the air, with some schools recognizing it and some not, but I lean toward including it since the CBF also has recognized awards like the National Pitcher of the Year Award, John Olerud Award, and Brooks Wallace Award. As for the standards of what constitutes "consensus," I think that's a tough one because media reporting is pretty inconsistent. Ultimately I fall back on a "majority" standard because going any higher than that often makes the "consensus" lists too small. I propose this overall standard:

And I don't mean dominate the discussion here, but I noticed that media releases sometimes (but not universally) use the term "Unanimous All-American" to indicate players selected by every selector. 1948 - 1953 Tournaments and appearances

Right now, Wikipedia shows the tournaments from 1947 through 1953 as having 8 participants only, not recognizing appearances from the district tournaments from 1948 through 1953 like it does for 1954 through 1975. After reviewing schools' media guides, I think there is a strong case to be made that we do include them.

I'm open to discussion either way, but I am considering adding updating the 6 tournament articles (1948 through 1953) to add in these district tournaments, which would then resemble the later years' pages, as well as adding these school's appearances on the overall NCAA Tournament page.
