- Probably for the same reason that Template:Infobox football club doesn't use a real/actual club crest. Because most club crests are copyrighted. And would need to be used under "fair use". And "fair use" couldn't be claimed for a copyrighted non-free crest used only as an "example" image in a non-article context. Guliolopez (talk) 21:21, 15 February 2026 (UTC)

"St" or "St." in club names?
[edit]Hi. In the discussion linked above (about the St. Breckan's GAA title), there was no clear consensus as to whether the abbreviation for "Saint" (in the club's name) should contain punctuation.
In terms of:
- WP:CONSISTENCY, the club is (now) the only member of Category:Munster GAA club stubs, named for a saint, that includes punctuation. (No similar members of Category:Leinster GAA club stubs, Category:Ulster GAA club stubs, Category:Connacht GAA club stubs, etc, include punctuation in the titles of clubs named after saints. In Category:Gaelic games clubs in County Kerry, for example, none of the club articles (St Brendan's Board GAA, St Brendan's Hurling Club, St Kieran's GAA (Kerry), St Mary's GAA (Kerry), St Patrick's GAA (Kerry), St Senan's GAA (Kerry), St Michael's/Foilmore, etc) include punctuation in their titles.
- WP:TITLE, it seems to me that a majority of the sources (Clare Champion, gaa.ie, RTÉ Sport, Clare Echo, HoganStand.com, etc) do not include punctuation, and as the guideline expects that
titles are based on how reliable English-language sources refer to the article's subject
, I wonder if the title used on Wikipedia should follow these reliable/independent sources.
(While it has been argued that the version with the punctuation "is the preferred language to be used by club & county officials
" this is (a) not supported by what I see on the club website/policies/etc and (b) is something of an WP:OFFICIALNAME argument.)
Personally I think that club naming conventions should likely be CONSISTENT. Except perhaps where a volume of significant/reliable/independent sources support an exception (which doesn't seem to be the case here).

- I don't have a strong preference either way about whether to use punctuation or not, but I would agree that we should settle on one or the other and keep them consistent. Without punctuation seems to be most commonly used at the minute but I won't argue one way or the other. Cavan121012 (talk) 12:06, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
