The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the Map workshop. Anyone can make a request for a map to be created or improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed. Many maps on the web are in the public domain. See c:Template:PD-map; no need to create another free map here if it already exists on the web. See this Casebook to see what maps qualify as public domain.
You are encouraged to share information and request advice from others. Also see possible conventions toolbox, map tutorials and topographic map tutorials.

Advice to requesters
What do we do?
  • Sourced requests: If possible, please try to provide a reliable source to create a map. This includes a map already on Wikipedia with a reliable source or an external link.
  • Please check: Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • Direct collaboration: Some mapmakers are especially interested by one topic area. If you notice a mapmaker fitting your needs, consider asking on their personal talk page to request maps.
  • {{Reqmap}}: To request a map, you can also tag the talk page of the article in need of a map with or {{Reqmapin|Australia}} (articles then appear in Category:Wikipedia requested maps)
If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

Fix historical label on First Turkic Khaganate map

[edit]

This map in the Wikibox for the First Turkic Khaganate depicts the central Asian steppe circa 576 CE. On its left side it contains a link that is incorrectly named "Avar Khaganate" - a misspelling of Avar Khanate which was a specific Avar polity that postdates the map by ~700 years. The link correctly directs to the Pannonian Avars page, which covers the relevant timeframe of the map. The link should say "Pannonian Avars" and not "Avar Khaganate". Please make this minor change! Thank you!

Precolonial Zimbabwe trade routes

[edit]

Could someone please do a more professional/less bastardised version of this map? It's for various articles such as Great Zimbabwe, History of Africa (7 in total). The source is Butua and the End of an Era (Van Waarden, 2012) page 50, I can email a screenshot of the page. Van Waarden's map has several other details, but it's just the ones included on this image that are necessary. Kowal2701 (talk, contribs) 14:06, 21 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Fumba Town

[edit]
Article(s)
Fumba Town
Request

Hi all. I'm looking to create a map of the Fumba Town development, a free economic zone located on the southwestern end of Unguja, the largest island of Zanzibar. I can provide you with this map as a starter. Do note that this takes you to a Tanzanian government website, so tread lightly if you're from East Africa, I'm not entirely certain how their program works down there but I know it's not great. You can find the map on page 26. I can also point you towards this previous discussion that has way more info that I'm sure you'd find helpful if you chose to take up this request. It includes maps of the smallest administrative subdivisions of Tanzania and the Zanzibar islands. and might be helpful attempting to determine exact boundaries off of a grainy map.

I can promise a barnstar as thanks, and help with an article of your choosing if you'd like, but really not much more than that. You have my thanks in advance. CSGinger14 (talk) 22:15, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@CSGinger14: IMHO, Barnstars are meant to be awarded after the fact. Attempting to "bribe" someone with one might be counterproductive. cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 14:45, 2 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Ming China

[edit]
  • The map (File:Jingnan Campaign (English).svg) is very confusing, to the point of being almost unusable. It contains so much detail that readers can hardly make out what is happening. In addition, its heavy reliance on color-coding raises accessibility concerns and may not comply with MOS:COLOR. I strongly suggest seeking assistance to create a clearer and more reader-friendly replacement.

These two maps are required for the Yongle Emperor article's Featured Article nomination, as a reviewer has specifically requested that they be included. Min968 (talk) 16:49, 7 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I am currently working on improving the Hongwu Emperor article for Featured Article standards and would appreciate assistance with several historical maps related to Zhu Yuanzhang's rise to power and the founding of the Ming dynasty.

A reviewer suggested that the article would benefit from maps that are closely integrated with the narrative and directly illustrate the major events discussed in the text.

Possible maps include:

  • The expansion of Zhu Yuanzhang's power from his joining of the Red Turban movement in 1352 to his victory at Lake Poyang in 1363.
  • The political and military situation in southern China during the conflicts between Zhu Yuanzhang, Chen Youliang, and Zhang Shicheng.
  • The Ming conquest of Yuan China (1367–1368), showing the routes of the Northern Expedition and major cities captured.
  • Campaigns against remaining Yuan forces after 1368, if feasible.

Ideally, the maps would be suitable for use in a Featured Article and use historical place names where appropriate.

Thank you for any assistance. Min968 (talk) 14:01, 19 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Ringed kingfisher distribution

[edit]

Hi, can someone make a distribution map for the ringed kingfisher? The current one is inaccurate. There is recent data from IUCN here. You can see large areas of the Andes and central Mexico are different. Thanks! Let Me Edit It (talk) 09:18, 9 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@LetmeEditit There is another file here. Isn't this OK? Ikonact (talk) 15:57, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
That file was made the day after I made my request. The person who made it must have had the same idea at the same time as me haha. It's perfect, thank you for bringing it to my attention! Let Me Edit It (talk) 16:36, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Blue Marble

[edit]

Hi everyone!

I am sorry that I can't make it my self, but I would need a hemispheric orthographic map centered on the coordinates of The Blue Marble, to be used as a clear view of the land imaged in the photo.

Thank you! Yours, Nsae Comp (talk) 23:07, 16 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Pilk: Would you be interested to create an SVG centered on 26°19′49″S 37°25′13″E / 26.33028°S 37.42028°E / -26.33028; 37.42028, similar to the excellent ones you've made? Thanks, cmɢʟee τaʟκ (please add {{ping|cmglee}} to your reply) 15:17, 19 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! I may not be able to get to this very quickly, but I have published the perspective projection map generator for anyone that would like to use it. (The "distance" slider is unitless.) -- Pilk (talk) 11:15, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Thanks! Ill write if I got to make the map.
Thanks again! Nsae Comp (talk) 18:02, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
PS: regarding the distance slider, you have it set to 33,5 for the "Hello World!" image perspective. Why 33,5? Nsae Comp (talk) 19:23, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead now and created one with a distance set to 100.
Blue Marble hemispheric map
Nsae Comp (talk) 21:18, 24 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I laid the image over the Blue Marble photo and I seem to have not set it sufficiently right, so that there are significant distortions. Dont know what can be done, I guess I would need your help on this afterall.
No hurry though! Nsae Comp (talk) 04:55, 25 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hornbill ranges Comment

[edit]
Article(s)
List of hornbills - and the maps can go on the species articles too
Request
The list could do with a few more range maps. Don't need all of them doing, or have any specific preferences as to which get done, except the one for the Northern red-billed hornbill, which needs changing, as the iucn page shows a larger distribution. Having a couple for the Rhyticeros and Penelopides sections would be good. The IUCN citations provide sources. -- EmergentAnarchy (talk) 20:34, 19 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
