  • The global consultation on partial and temporary office actions that ended in October received a closing statement from staff concluding, among other things, that the WMF will no longer use partial or temporary Office Action bans... until and unless community consensus that they are of value or Board directive.

Skb8721 I'm not sure why your image does not show on the campaign page. I am new to this area of Wikimedia Commons, but my best guess is that the page only shows the oldest or newest uploads. Anyway, I thank you for participating in the contest. - ZLEA T\C 15:01, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Donald Trung Thank you. I'm not sure that this is a case of vandalism as I don't see any visual changes. I will look into it later, but at the moment it looks like a replacement of depreciated wikitext. - ZLEA T\C 19:07, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

Currency Contest

Hi, I received an award for participating in the currency contest, but on this page I don't see the one currency bill I submitted:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uploaded_via_Campaign:US-Banknote-Contest

Should it be there? (Or maybe it is there and I'm just missing it!) It was from the Bank of Louisiana, but it's not any of the Bank of Louisiana notes shown.

Sincerely,

Skb8721 (talk) 16:35, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

@Skb8721:, that it because you uploaded it using the regular MediaWiki Upload Wizard and not the special Upload Wizard for the contest. --Donald Trung (talk) 21:22, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [21]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

WikiProject Numismatics newsletter - February 2020

Roanoke, Virginia

Hi. I recently attempted to make a comment to start a talk about Roanoke's pairing with other cities based on its snowfall. I noticed that you reverted the highlight of Roanoke in the article which I completely understand. However, I was hoping that someone might discuss Roanoke and its pairing under the talk page. My intention was not to vandalize the article or to contradict you in any way. I just wanted to start a discussion. I would just like to know what your opinion was on this topic and why you felt the need to revert the edit? Thank You. P.S. If I am being rude or stepped out of line in any way, please kindly let me know as this was far from my intention. 50.202.217.173 (talk) 19:27, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

This early version of the Reply tool automatically signs and indents comments.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.

Reply tool improved with edit tool buttons
In a future update, the team plans to test a tool for easily linking to another user's name, a rich-text editing option, and other tools.

The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.

  • On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
  • The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
    • an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
    • a rich-text visual editing option, and
    • other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

To hear more about Editing Team updates, please add your name to the "Get involved" section of the project page. You can also watch these pages: the main project page, Updates, Replying, and User testing.

Aircraft placeholder stubs

Hi, I know it seems like a good idea, but unless you are going to write an actual article it is better to leave them as red-links, as reminders that a FULL article still needs to be written. If we filled all the red-links (see any List of aircraft page), it is highly likely that articles might not get written. So, on balance, if you aren't going to write a full article then leave the red-link alone.--Petebutt (talk) 00:42, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Petebutt Thanks for the advice, but I do intend on expanding the articles in the near future. I don't have the sources required for anything but stubs at the moment, but I'm actively looking for sources to expand them and I expect that I will be able to do more digging near the end of the year once I'm finished with my classes. Don't worry, the articles won't remain stubs for long, not if I can help it. - ZLEA T\C 02:12, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Great, no problems, but still better to leave them as red-links till you are ready.--Petebutt (talk) 03:52, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Squared.Circle.Boxing I think we need to go to WP:ANI about this. I don't think salting the titles will do much to prevent paid users from recreating the article. - ZLEA T\C 21:32, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
That may be worth a shot as the deletion clearly isn’t getting the point across. I’ll leave the ANI process to you though, I’ve never had much luck round those parts lol – 2.O.Boxing 22:32, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
Squared.Circle.Boxing I've brought it up at ANI here. If you know of any evidence I missed, feel free to bring it up. - ZLEA T\C 23:49, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Zeppelin-Messerschmitt ZMe 423

Hi, do you have more sources for Zeppelin-Messerschmitt ZMe 423? A list of designations isn't enough to establish notability per WP:GNG. - BilCat (talk) 04:04, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

BilCat Unfortunately, I haven't found anything other than that one source. I've gone ahead and merged it into Messerschmitt Me 323, which is probably the best option until more sources can be found. - ZLEA T\C 13:45, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
Good idea! Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 19:27, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Specifications for Tejas MK1

Hi ZLEA,

Apologies if I came across as rude, but it seems some of the specs sourced from HAL website are old. For example how can 9,800 kg of gross weight and 13,500 kg of MTOW result in 5300 kg payload ? The specs in HAL states old payload was 5.3Tn = 4800kg approx, so clearly it cant be 5300 kg. The Engine specifications for GE404-IN20 generating 90KN wet thrust is also false, latest GEAviation website https://www.geaviation.com/sites/default/files/datasheet-F404-Family.pdf clearly says max wet thrust for the engine can be 84-85KN max. The blog post has interviews from retired Mirage pilots, HAL data is way outdated since 2013. Let me know what you think. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sags1991 (talkcontribs) 02:08, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Sags1991 That's understandable, but you have to realize that bloggers can claim whatever they want. Yes, the blog claims to have interviewed retired Mirage pilots, but there is no track record that shows that they are telling the truth. HAL, as the builder of the aircraft, should be able to keep their website up to date with specs. Most other sources will either restate what the manufacturer says or make up specs. The only way for a source to state accurate specs when the manufacturer's specs are inaccurate would be to examine the aircraft themselves, which would not likely happen as the Tejas is a modern military aircraft. - ZLEA T\C 02:20, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Zeppelin-Messerschmitt aircraft requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Vandalism?

I fixed a typo in HAL Tejas and you call it "Vandalism"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by User070510 (talkcontribs) 17:34, 11 July 2020 (UTC) User070510 (talk) 11 July 2020 (UTC)

User070510 That's because it's not a typo. You've been told that before but you changed it again anyway. "Comptroller" is a real title that is separate from "controller". - ZLEA T\C 17:53, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

On 24 July 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article General Dynamics–Boeing AFTI/F-111A Aardvark, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that instead of using standard control surfaces, the AFTI/F-111A Aardvark research aircraft (pictured) had an adaptive wing that could change its airfoil shape for inflight control? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/General Dynamics–Boeing AFTI/F-111A Aardvark. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, General Dynamics–Boeing AFTI/F-111A Aardvark), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Reply tool

The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[132]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

Next: New discussion tool

Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:52, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
