Short descriptions

[edit]

Keep in mind that short descriptions should be 40 characters or less per WP:SDFORMAT. --GoneIn60 (talk) 07:54, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:GoneIn60 I sincerely apologize, it's been more difficult with some articles than others. I'll definitely be sure to keep that in mind going forward though-thanks for reminding me! XxVxX898 (talk) 12:00, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing. One common way to reduce it is to avoid repeating any terms in the article title. So for example in this edit, there's no reason to repeat "Cedar Point", so I removed that. --GoneIn60 (talk) 15:12, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely keep that in mind from now on when I'm editing/adding short descriptions. XxVxX898 (talk) 15:15, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:GoneIn60 My apologies for the double post, but one article where I had trouble getting the short description to fit the character limit was Keith Sparks. When you get a chance, would you mind taking a look at it and seeing if there's any other way to shorten it? XxVxX898 (talk) 15:19, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Made an attempt here. Simplified it to a basic "Theme park designer and developer", which is 33 characters. Sometimes, editors forget that short descriptions show up as subtitles in certain situations when searching on Wikipedia, and the point of them is to distinguish the search result from other similar searches. So for example, if there were two Keith Sparks, knowing that one was a theme park designer/developer would be enough to tell it apart from another Keith Sparks that was say a famous singer (made that up). Only a small amount of detail is needed in the short description to accomplish that goal. --GoneIn60 (talk) 16:32, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's definitely helpful to know, and something I'll be sure to keep in mind! Thanks for all your help!XxVxX898 (talk) 16:39, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
