Information icon Hello, Tomcochranesite. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. 81.187.192.168 (talk) 01:41, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because your account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia. Also, your username gives the impression that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

If you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization, you may request unblock and a username change. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement; and
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked; and
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked; and
  • Provide a new username.

To do this, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Alexf(talk) 02:06, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I did not mean to use the Tomcochranesite for promotional purposes. I changed my username to person8765 since I am only trying to contribute to the Tom Cochrane wiki and not promote anything.

Accept reason:

It appears that the issues that led to the block are now well understood by this user. Please select an option from Wikipedia:Changing username and file a request as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking., Beeblebrox Beebletalks 21:29, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

What, if anything, is the exact nature of your connection to that website? --Yamla (talk) 23:52, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yamla, thanks for your reply. I am the webmaster of the site www.tomcochranesite.com. I do not make anything from the site. It is pure voluntary. The site is for sharing Tom Cochrane's music and talent. I did not realize there were name restrictions when creating an account on here. I was including links to sections of the website for people to view information about him and his music, not for making a profit. If this is a problem, I can request to have my wikipedia account removed. Tomcochranesite (talk) 05:50, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not possible to remove an account, as legally all edits must be attributable to someone. You could just abandon your account if desired, though the block is on you personally, not just your account- if you wanted to edit Wikipedia later, you would still need to use this account. 331dot (talk) 09:31, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Are you associated with the online store that is linked to on your website? So Mr. Cochrane does not compensate you for managing/operating his website? 331dot (talk) 09:34, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No I am not associated with the store online. That is Tom's store that he uses for his merchandise sales. I only link to it since it is for his benefit, not mine. No, I am not compensated for managing/operating the website www.tomcochranesite.com. My entire site is only voluntary. His official site that is managed by a marketing company is www.tomcochane.com . Please review the Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, then reply below stating how they apply to your block. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 08:55, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that it looked like I was advertising the tomcochranesite.com website for profit but as I mentioned earlier, I do not gain anything from the site or sell anything. It is to only help the artist. Had I known that there would be a problem, I would not have made my wikipedia username Tomcochranesite nor would I reference my site on here. I respect this policy and I wish I had known about this before creating my account. What would you like me to do? I reviewed the guidelines and I am more than happy to remove any references to my site as a respect to the policy. Tomcochranesite (talk) 17:49, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Tomcochranesite, the main sticking point (once your username is changed) would be a conflict of interest due to your connection with Tom Cochrane. Can you please read the page that @Significa liberdade linked and explain how you will adhere to the policy going forwards? Blue Sonnet (talk) 18:42, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, the conflict of interest guideline is different from the payment-disclosure policy. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 19:23, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Blue Sonnet, thanks for clarifying. I read the section about COI editing. I have no problem following these. The only items I recall contributing to were links. I don't recall editing anything. I will check to make sure and I can remove anything that was directly edited by me. I see what you mean about being directly involved in the editing. I see how proposing changes should be done instead of direct editing. I have no problem with this method of suggesting changes. Also as mentioned about creating new articles, it makes sense to put the articles through Articles of Creation instead of a direct creation.
Please let me know what else I need to do.
Editors with a COI should follow Wikipedia policies and best practices scrupulously:
  • you should disclose your COI when involved with affected articles;
  • you are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly;
  • you may propose changes on talk pages (by using the {{edit COI}} template), so that they can be peer-reviewed;
  • you should put new articles through the Articles for Creation (AfC) process instead of creating them directly;
  • you should not act as a reviewer of affected article(s) at AfC, new pages patrol or elsewhere;
  • you should respect other editors by keeping discussions concise.

Would it be possible to change my username to person8765? I checked and the username was available. I would not have named my account Tomcochranesite had I understood the complication. Tomcochranesite (talk) 02:54, 14 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what is going on with the unblock review tool today but it did not post my reasoning, which was that you now seem to understand the reasons for the block and have made reasonable assurances that such behavior will not be repeated. Please select an option from Wikipedia:Changing username and file a request as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Welcome back. Beeblebrox Beebletalks 21:33, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Beeblebrox. I submitted a request for a name change. Going forward I now understand the policy and I will make sure it is followed. Cheers. Tomcochranesite (talk) 20:23, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Beeblebrox, I just went to look at my new account name and it states that it was created back in Feb 25, 2024.
That's a year ago and when I did a name check for user98765, the name was available. My username was changed but the global account information is not correct. I am confused. Could you please help me figure out why my new nickname shows the following? Thanks for your assistance.
Global account information
  • Username: User98765
  • Registered: 01:30, 25 February 2024 (11 months ago)
  • Total edit count: 11
  • Number of attached accounts: 5
I also have another message from and agent from Italy who gave me a link to make the declaration of the conflict of interest as we discussed earlier. I cannot do this until my name is unique and correct. User98765 (talk) 07:51, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unless this is when my "Tomcochranesite" account was created. User98765 (talk) 07:54, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Beeblebrox, my username has now been change to a non-conflicting username and I added the note of the COI on my userpage. As mentioned earlier, going forward I will abide to the policy as we discussed for any suggestions or edits to Tom Cochrane related materials. Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks. User98765 (talk) 15:57, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Beeblebrox I forgot the @ in front of your name. Just to let you know, my username has now been change to a non-conflicting username and I added the note of the COI on my userpage. As mentioned earlier, going forward I will abide to the policy as we discussed for any suggestions or edits to Tom Cochrane related materials. Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks. User98765 (talk) 15:58, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, when you are renamed, you are still operating the same account, just with a different name, the contributions from before the rename are still attributed to you. So that's what's going on with your account details. I've fixed the COI notice so it displays properly. If you follow the COI procedures for any edits related to Tom Cochrane you should be fine. Beeblebrox Beebletalks 20:30, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Beeblebrox . Ok. So everything up to now is corrected and ok? I am just making sure I don't have to correct anything else from the past. Going forward I now know what to do. Thanks again! Cheers! User98765 (talk) 21:05, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
