Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, ছিলঠিয়া নাগৰী. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Sylheti Nagari. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Sylheti Nagari – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions.  GILO   A&E 15:18, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Assamese language

[edit]

Hi @Msasag:, your edits and additions in Assamese language are greatly appreciated. In keeping with the criterion for Wikipedia:Featured_article_criteria may be we could use the Wikipedia:Summary_style technique and spin off some of the details to subtopics. For example, we could create sub-topics on Assamese verbs, which we could use for a thorough discussion. We could use something like English language (good article) as a model. What do you say? Chaipau (talk) 11:21, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Chaipau: That's better! Should we make the article Assamese grammar or add them in separate articles? Msasag (talk) 14:51, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Chaipau: Hi, do you have any samples (clearly visible is possible) of Kaitheli, Bamuniya and Garhgaya styles? Msasag (talk) 18:53, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No, I do not have such clear examples of script. Chaipau (talk) 20:39, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have discovered the some digital copies in the Dibrugarh University archive. Did you find them useful? Chaipau (talk) 16:26, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaipau: Yeah and I'm making two fonts based on some of those, also images of old manuscripts from Sahapedia and others. Msasag (talk) 19:48, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Regarding Kamarupi page

[edit]

hello, i noticed your new page about archaic assamese and i would like to know more about this historical phase of the script. Also, why not merge this into the existing kamarupi article? Also, i saw some uploads in wikimedia commons called kamarupi letters. Can you provide the source for them? Symphonicallyu (talk) 11:40, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The current Assamese alphabet is a version of the Bengali script as per the sources (such as Gogoi, Deva Goswami, Neog). This new page represents the Assamese script that was used before this replacment, and as Deva Goswami says, it was being used even during the 20th century when the script for printing was the Bengalified version. Even the differences between the current Standard alphabets of Bengali and Assamese, i.e, the unique r and v/w of Assamese were being used in the Bengali script before standardisation. The original Assamese script had other characters which were distinct from Bengal, especially the conjuncts as Gogoi mentions. As for merging with Kamarupi script, this term is more often used for the script used in the inscriptions of the Kamarupa kingdom (5th-13th centuries). I found only one source which uses the term for the recent descendant. The term "Assamese script" is used for it more often. Bora uses the term Kamarupi script for the script used during Kamarupa kingdom. And the term "Proto Assamese" for that used from 10th-12th century. For the next phase, he uses "Assamese script", and for the current form, he used "Bengali-Assamese script" as it's a version of the Bengali standard that was started to be used for printing Assamese. The sources are cited on the page. But some of the sources are in Assamese (Neog, Gogoi, Deva Goswami). Msasag (talk) 12:27, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting from sources. (Translation: For technical reasons, the Christian missionaries in the beginning of the 19th century started to use the Bengali script used in Serampore to print the Assamese bible. The historical Assamese and Bengali scripts had great differences mainly in the conjunct forms. In the first printed Assamese book, the bible published in 1813, the Bengali script was used. But in 1833, the conjunct consonants were created on the basis of the historical Assamese script. But afterwards, it was abandoned and completely replaced by the Bengali script. That's why someone who can read the current Assamese alphabet is unable to or finds it difficult to read the historical Assamese script.), Deva Goswami: (Translation: The script that was used at that time [during the time of Sankardeva], was called the Kaitheli script... But it's very unfortunate that this Kaitheli script is only intelligible for 3/4th of today's population. That too is limited only to villages and sattras. People who can read this script are rare in urban areas. Because of the usage of the Bengali script in the printing press, nobody is concerned about the old Kaitheli script.) Msasag (talk) 12:47, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
okay... but i would suggest not to link the Assamese alphabet chart link to this page, as the chart is about the current Bengali-Assamese alphabet, not the medieval script. maybe add this in the section about script descendents? Also could you please provide sources for the Wikimedia uploads? i would be happy to prepare a chart (with sources) for the script if you could provide a source or a font. Symphonicallyu (talk) 14:23, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm currently in the process of updating the charts with more detailed information about the vowel diacritics and special modifiers, with relevant sources (ex: Unicode proposals, educational primers etc) in the description. So if i can get a source i would be happy to include a chart for this script Symphonicallyu (talk) 14:29, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The chart that I added in the new article is of the traditional Assamese script. Transliteration to the current Assamese alphabet is given below the characters for comparison. I added the source for this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Assamese_kirtan_manuscript.jpg. The other two images are taken from the website: https://xasipaatputhi.assam.gov.in/search-meta-data. Unfortunately the option to view the manuscripts is currently unavailable, I had downloaded the PDFs back when it was available to view and download. Msasag (talk) 15:03, 26 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
