Concerning the Carrum Downs Secondary College Article

[edit]

Hi HJTri, welcome to Wikipedia. I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to write out and add an article about Carrum Downs Secondary College. I know it takes a lot of time and a bit of courage to write your first article and I want to encourage you to keep working at it. We need your help. I wanted to take a moment and explain why I edited the article the way I did, removing various lists, vision statements, etc. Basically:

  • Wikipedia is not a directory. We don't need to be a phonebook, list of addresses, bulletin board, etc. As pertains to this topic; when creating school articles, it is not necessary to provide a catalog of courses.
  • Wikipedia is not a list of trivia. Wikipedia doesn't need to list every single fact that's out there just because... We should try and list information that is important, relevant, and noteworthy, kind of the Cliff Notes style if you will. e.g. what does the world at large know about Carrum Downs? Is it famous? Were there any famous alumni that came from this school? Was there something notable about its history? Were there any events at this school that received major media coverage? etc...
  • Wikipedia is not a soapbox and not a place for advertisements. We need our coverage of commercial/educational/governmental organizations to be neutral and objective. Basically, whenever you're contributing an article, ask yourself the question - could you see what you are writing as a candidate for inclusion in the Encyclopedia Britannica, a journal, a reference book? This is what we are aiming for...allowing articles to take on a breathless commercial tone takes away from that.

You may be wondering, well, what can I include in an article like this? Please don't give up. You may want to look at some models for inspiration:

  • Toyo University - This is a private school in Japan. The article's kind of sparse, but I like the Overview section.
  • Brooklyn Technical High School - This is also a secondary school, you may want to look at this article. Looks pretty solid to me.
  • Yale - Note how the article manages to talk about the campus facilities in an objective, dispassionate manner.

When you edit, please try to cite sources. Personally, I find the footnotes system to be both useful and easy to do. You may also want to read up on citations on Wikipedia.

Thanks again for your contributions,
