Dr. Denise M. Johnson is an Instructor in Art History at Pasadena City College. She earned a B.A. in Art and Psychology from UC Riverside, an MFA from Cal Arts with a focus in feminist and contemporary art theory, and a doctorate from Claremont Graduate University in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Media Studies. Her dissertation considered the occupation photographs of Los Angeles architect, Paul R. Williams within the conceptual framing of cites/sights/sites of trouble.
Denise has taught all periods of western art history from the prehistoric era to the present, including contemporary art history, African American art history, the history of photography, women in art history, semiotics, art of the ancient Americas along with studio courses in black-and-white photography and drawing.
Dr. Johnson has curated a number of contemporary art exhibitions examining feminism, motherhood, and California's contested landscapes and has written for Punk/Post Punk and Make/Shift magazine. Denise was part of Chapman University's Getty Pacific Standard Time LA/LA initiative curatorial team and co-curated the exhibition, My Barrio: Emigdio Vasquez and Chicana/o Identity in Orange County, connecting the work of Orange, CA muralist, Emigdio Vasquez with works by contemporary artists in Fall 2017.
