What am I doing here?

[edit]

Cocos Island is a fascinating place. At Chatham Bay the rocks are covered with inscriptions made by sailors. They chiseled the name of their ship, home port, and date of visit. The first to arrive were mostly New England whalers, but the earliest name that I found was left by a man involved in the maritime fur trade. His uncles were better known:

  • Charles Winship, brig Betsy, the first American to enter San Diego Bay
  • Nathan Winship, ship Albatross, who made the first attempt to settle on the Columbia River
  • Jonathan Winship, ship O'Cain, who discovered Humboldt Bay, California

I would like to improve the Jonathan Winship stub.
