The Things of Ramón Lamote is a narrative work by Paco Martín, published in Spanish in 1985. It is a foundational work that marks the introduction of the magic realism movement in Galician youth literature, with roots in Cunqueiro's work,[1] one of the greatest bestsellers in Galician literature,[2] and particularly the best-seller[3] of children's and young adult literature from Galicia.[4]
The book was also included in the prestigious IBBY Honour List (1986) and White Ravens (1988); the author was recognized with the Premio O Barco de Vapor in 1984, the Premio Antón Losada Diéguez in 1985, and the National Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature of Spain in 1986 thanks to this title. More than 20 years later, in 2008, it received a sequel with the release of The New Things of Ramón Lamote, also illustrated by Xan Balboa and published by Galaxia.
In 2002, the book was included as number 66 in the Biblioteca Galega 120 of La Voz de Galicia.
Translations
[edit]The work has been translated into several languages (highlighting the success of the Spanish translation that spread across Hispanoamerica) and has become a reference in children's and young adult literature, bringing the character Ramón Lamote into the history of Galician literature. It has been translated into Spanish twice,[5][6] into Catalan,[7] into Asturian[8] and into Basque.[9]
