The Philippeion was an ionic ancient structure located in the Altis of Olympia. A circular memorial with a dome top covered in limestone and marbles, a Tholos, a pristine example of monumental architecture in Ancient Greece. The structure was made to monument Philip II of Macedon's victory after the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC. Philip dedicated the structure to Zeus. After Philip's death in 336 BC, the structure was later completed by his son, Alexander the Great. Alexander assigned the famous Athenian sculptor, Leochares, to craft five chryselephantine statues representing his royal family, including Alexander himself, his parents Philip and Olympias, and his grandparents Amyntas III and Euridice I.
The building was defined by its eighteen ionic columns.
