MYRINGOTOMY TUBES'
DEFINITION Myringotomy is a surgical procedure in which a small incision is made in the eardrum (the tympanic membrane), usually in both ears. Ear tubes, or tympanostomy tubes, are small tubes open at both ends that are inserted into the incisions in the eardrums during myringotomy.
HISTORY INDICATIONS Pediatric indications OME-- Candidates for surgery include children with OME lasting 4 months or longer with persistent hearing loss or other signs and symptoms, recurrent or persistent OME in children at risk regardless of hearing status, and OME and structural damage to the tympanic membrane or middle ear. Ultimately, the recommendation for surgery must be individualized based on consensus between the primary care physician, otolaryngologist, and parent or caregiver that a particular child would benefit from intervention. Children with OME of any duration who are at risk are candidates for earlier surgery.(1) Tympanostomy tube placement may be warranted for children who have had ≥3 distinct and well-documented episodes within six months or ≥4 episodes within 12 months (find reference) Adult indications WHO DOES IT ENT surgeon---Out patient procedure PROCEEDURE--TYPES COMPLICATIONS--ACUTE & CHRONIC OR LONG TERM
