Urakami Station (浦上駅, Urakami-eki) is a train station in the Kawaguchi-chō neighborhood of Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by JR Kyushu and is the junction between the old and new lines of the Nagasaki Main Line. With the exception of the sleeper train Akatsuki, all trains stop here. It is also a stop for the Nagasaki Electric Tramway.
Layout

[edit]- Urakami Station has a simple, one-story station building. It was built after the previous station building was destroyed in the the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Inside the station is a bakery and an Ampm convenience store.
- There is an automatic ticket machine, but no turnstile.
Platform
[edit]Urakami Station is an above-ground station with two side platforms facing each other, servicing two tracks. A pedestrian overpass connects the two platforms.

Environs
[edit]Connected to Urakami Station is the Urakami Station stop on the Nagasaki Electric Tramway. Near the station are hospitals, condominiums, concert halls, broadcast stations, and schools. Many of the people who use Urakami Station are commuting to work or school.

History
[edit]- December 11, 1889 - Kyushu Railway opens track between Hakata Station and Chitose Station. Tosu Station is one of the first train stations in Kyūshū.
- August 20, 1891 - Track from Tosu Station to Saga Station opens.
- July 1, 1907 - Railways nationalize and the station becomes part of Japanese National Railways.
- August 11, 1945 - A large-scale air raid destroys the station, though the bookstore is saved.
- April 1, 1987 - Railways privatize and the station is inherited by JR Kyushu and JR Freight.
- March 18, 2006 - JR Freight discontinues use of the station. Tosu Freight Terminal Station opens.
