Article name: Electric cooperatives of the United States

Over 800 independent, customer-owned electric utility cooperatives in the United States supply power to 42 million people (2025),[1] many of them using the Touchstone Energy brand. Most were started in the 1930s to serve rural areas, supported by subsidized loans from the federal Rural Electrification Administration (REA) (now known as the Rural Utilities Service (RUS)). As American cities have expanded, some of these cooperatives serving once rural service areas have become largely suburban and those cooperatives have evolved into large utilities.

Distribution cooperatives

Distribution cooperatives are owned by their retail, commercial and industrial customers and distribute power to them. The power they distribute is almost always generated and transmitted to them by other utilities.[2]
