Template-protected edit request on 11 December 2024 tinier tiny-type notification via inline tag style

[edit]

Tfd/sandbox, Tfm/sandbox

Readers currently find it unusual to see intrusive full-height inline links:

"The service operates in conjunction with the Sunrise Seto service to ‹See TfM›Takamatsu between Tokyo and ‹See TfM›Okayama. The combined 14-car train departs from Tokyo, and stops at ‹See TfM›Yokohama, ‹See TfM›Atami, ‹See TfM›Numazu, ‹See TfM›Fuji, ‹See TfM›Shizuoka, ‹See TfM›Hamamatsu (final evening stop), ‹See TfM›Himeji (first morning stop), and arrives at ‹See TfM›Okayama, where the train splits."

How is that "minimal"?

The advantage of a superscript is that readers are already accustomed to skipping over blue superscript references and inline cleanup tags.

I refactored your changes so that they don't use {{fix}} (since TfD is not cleanup), do use the tfd class (to enable hiding subsequent ones per the section above), and moved them to a new tinier keyword, keeping the existing tiny as is. --Ahecht (TALK

Thank you for fixing my code!
Old <angle bracket idea>
Also, the alternative I wrote in the meantime for visual distinctiveness in response to "Tfm is not cleanup" is using <> instead of []: The service operates in conjunction with the Sunrise Seto service to TfMTakamatsu between Tokyo and TfMOkayama. The combined 14-car train departs from Tokyo, and stops at TfMYokohama, TfMAtami, TfMNumazu, TfMFuji, TfMShizuoka, TfMHamamatsu (final evening stop), TfMHimeji (first morning stop), and arrives at TfMOkayama, where the train splits.

My expertise on Wikipedia template development is nil, but my complaint seems to be motivating this change, so let me add my perspective.
For an ordinary user, TfM is every bit as confusing and distracting as ‹See TfM›. It's an unfamiliar annotation, and if they click on it, they land into a change discussion that pure gibberish to most them. Every one of them thinks "why the actual fuck do I need to see this"?
I hope I'm not coming off as somebody who's mad at template developers. You folks do work that's absolutely essential to those of us who just edit content. But you're a relatively small community, and I don't understand why you can't find a way to notify each other of template change discussions without munging content read by millions of Wikipedia readers.
Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 18:48, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, nevermind the <angle bracket> idea. Most readers might only know [].
a way to notify each other of template change discussions Another new default-visible and IP-inclusive idea: We can use {{topicon}}, which teleports the notice to the top right without munging content. Unfortunately that would involve more work and article-detrimental TfDs are rare, and the related attempt at Template talk:Requested move notice#Proposed revision to make this notice less disruptive fell through. Another idea moves everything to the end matter, by using display:none |group=ed <ref>, which is deduplicated. 172.97.141.219 (talk) 19:08, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for listening to my concerns. Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 20:43, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In noting that #Hide subsequent inline instances above has been implemented, and thus the TFD notice will only show once for any given template on a page, is there still a strong desire to change the announcement notice? Primefac (talk) 14:22, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My original motive was stylistic consistency. I don't know anywhere else ‹› is used, so I find those angle brackets too idiosyncratic.
That said, I wanted to replace tiny instead of making a new type. Having a separate tinier type might lead to less consistency and more complexity. Before #Hide subsequent inline instances was implemented, I weakly supported or was neutral about this current edit request. Now I weakly oppose or am neutral. If we don't add a new type, I would normal-support this. 172.97.141.219 (talk) 00:52, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I'm fine letting the discussion continue, but I'll disable the edit request until a new consensus develops. Primefac (talk) 07:29, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please can "subst:" be added inside the braces, on the line that recommends posting {{Tfd notice}} on the creator's talk page? – Fayenatic London 22:35, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:44, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Hide all but the first TFD notice in each paragraph"

[edit]

@Ahecht, this made stray spaces appear on pages like State_Automobile_Inspectorate#History. You might want to adjust this. 1234qwer1234qwer4 21:18, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This template appears to break the formatting of itself and the pages it appears on.

[edit]

1. Template's formatting broken: For example on Template:Life_in_Kurdistan, there is a red outline and inside it reads "This template is being discussed in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy. Help reach a consensus at its entry.". However, on pages such as Erbil and Kurdistan there is no red outline and it instead reads "‹ The template below (Life in Kurdistan) is being considered for deletion. See templates for discussion to help reach a consensus. ›".

2. Effects on page formatting: Use of this template pushes all text below the infobox resulting in a large white space at the top of the page when viewed on desktop. (Note: the leading paragraph appears before the infobox on when viewed on mobile.) CatZombies (talk) 17:55, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(1) is intentional, there is plenty in the archives of this talk page. (2) I don't see this happening. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:41, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth the second one can happen if the type isn't set properly, but it appears that in this case it was set properly. Primefac (talk) 00:13, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like #2 was fixed by another user(the template wasn't applied with "type=sidebar"). Thanks for the reply. CatZombies (talk) 00:16, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SeaDragon1: Please don't paste code blobs into talk pages, they are difficult to interpret and impossible to test. Instead, use the sandbox and testcases, in accordance with WP:TESTCASES. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 06:58, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note I changed the request to use {{text diff}} with no other content change, which does make it a bit more obvious. I think I am in support of this request, as the deletion policy page is not as well-suited towards describing why we would be deleting a template. Might be missing something obvious though, so I'll leave this open for further comment. Primefac (talk) 11:29, 22 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request to complete TfD nomination

[edit]

Template:Template for discussion has been listed at Templates for discussion (nomination), but it was protected, so it could not be tagged. Please add:

<noinclude>{{subst:template for discussion|help=off}}</noinclude>

to the top of the page to complete the nomination. Thank you. VidanaliK (talk to me) (contributions) 18:54, 13 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@VidanaliK:  Not done: No point; see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2026 April 13#Template:Template for discussion. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:34, 13 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
VidanaliK if you have issues with the notice for a specific template it is often possible to make it less intrusive or in the rare case it breaks stuff remove it entirely, fyi. Trialpears (talk) 23:00, 14 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
