Kazakh name

[edit]

There is an obvious incosistency in transcription: Arabic-script رايونى is neither ауданы nor aýdany, it is районы/raiony (or something like this). — 2dk (talk) 14:10, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, I think. Yue🌙 04:20, 23 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Are all parts of the hatnote necessary?

[edit]

I'm generally inclined towards hatnote minimalism, and I have to ask if the two entries in the current hatnote (other than Xinjiang (disambiguation)) are necessary in accordance with WP:NOTAMBIG. Xinjiang is something of a Chinese exonym for the region, so it's improbable that someone looking for information on the region of East Turkestan (usually associated with Uyghur separatism in modern discourse) would use this term to search for it (the inverse hatnote is more appropriate as this article covers the political unit that roughly corresponds to historic East Turkestan). Chinese Turkestan seems even less appropriate, as it's equally improbable that someone would use "Xinjiang" to search for this specific geographical area, with the added fact that it's a largely historical term used specifically by Europeans before there was a Xinjiang Autonomous Region. Again, the inverse hatnote seems fine as it's not wholly unlikely that someone would search "Chinese Turkestan" to find information on Xinjiang (just not the other way around). — An anonymous username, not my real name 19:11, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You're correct. And, East Turkestan is a wikilinked term in the second paragraph, which should help address any perceived need to avoid trim. JArthur1984 (talk) 19:15, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, went ahead and cut back on the note. — An anonymous username, not my real name 21:17, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal

[edit]

Xinjiang Province, People's Republic of ChinaXinjiang

There really is no reason for the destination article to exist. While the status of Xinjiang was changed from a province to a autonomous region, it is still a first-level administrative division that retained its borders and name. The destination article is practically dead in pageviews. Other than the lead, it is only composed of four paragraphs, all of which can easily be merged into the main Xinjiang article. The administrative divisions table can be moved to List of administrative divisions of Xinjiang in a new section titled Historical divisions.

After reading WP:BOLDMERGE and WP:STUB, I will perform the merge now. Wasting time is still my passion (talk) 17:26, 12 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
