Origin of Name?
[edit]In the first paragraph of the "WinCo Foods" section, there's a (reference-supported, from the Idaho Statesman) note about its name: 'The name is a portmanteau of "winning company"'.
I've run across another source (also a newspaper article about the name change, from Statesman Journal in Salem, OR) that seems to claim that it represented the company's US States of operation (Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, and Oregon): https://www.newspapers.com/article/statesman-journal-waremart-changes-name/16224663/
Not sure if this justifies a note or an edit. Arbitar (talk) 05:37, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- Maybe. The idea that it was an acronym of the first letters of the five original states the company operated in is just a funny idea. It has never been official, and the company is clear that WinCo is a blending of Winning and Company. And WinCo now has operations in Utah, Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma. In this article, Michael Read (a company VP, at least in 2012) called it "folklore." I'm not opposed to mentioning it briefly as a means of dispelling the myth and stating that the state-name origin is false. I can go ahead and make the edit. pillowcrow 19:25, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
100% ownership?
[edit]I don't want to make this edit in case it isn't true, but this site has an asterisk next to companies that are 100% employee owned. Winco is among them. I couldn't navigate the first two hyperlinks provided for the claim, the last (and oldest) one is from winco and claims 80% ownership. It isn't hard to believe it has become 100% employee owned in the last decade though. Gavel&scythe (talk) 00:04, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
- From what I understand, NCEO is a legitimate source. I also found this source: https://www.certifiedeo.com/company/winco-foods. I don't think there are any reliable or current sources that claim 80%. With these two sources, it's probably safe to make an edit. pillowcrow 17:09, 17 October 2025 (UTC)
