Neologism vs. Historical Technical Term

[edit]

I would like to open a discussion regarding the title of this article, as it appears to be a modern neologism rather than an established historical technical term. A quick search on Google Books yields no results for this specific phrase prior to the 2000s. Furthermore, the section discussing the nickname "Monkey" does not seem directly relevant to the article's title. While terms like "powder monkey" are heavily documented across centuries and widely included in specialized age-of-sail dictionaries, the phrase "rigging monkey" never appears in those same historical sources. Instead, the term "topman" is significantly more common, verified, and historically accurate for this role. I suggest we reconsider the page title to reflect reliable historical nomenclature. Requested move 23 June 2026

[edit]

– As per my previous discussion above, the current title is a neologism and does not reflect the historical term of topman which has been reported in every Dictionary and Encyclopedia since the Age of Sail. Nicola Romani (talk) 04:23, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Note: the second proposal, Topman → ?, has been added because "Topman" is a page with content and must also be dispositioned. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. – welcome! – 07:02, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO the actual page named Topman could be moved to Topman (brand) Nicola Romani (talk) 07:15, 23 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
