Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on April 6, 2011.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that Rebecca Black's "Friday", dubbed the "worst song ever" by some critics, has made Black a "viral star" with the video attracting over 80 million Youtube hits?

Singles

[edit]

@Banksishere: I figured this would be contested, so I want to provide my reasoning: Rebecca no doubt has notable songs that she did which should be the scope of the article. Just because she did cover songs does not mean we should or have to include them. In fact, if you look up some of her albums some of the songs listed on them aren't even covered on the "singles" list here. So rather than make an empty chart with dash marks for songs that did not chart, I propose that more focus be placed on the things she is known for. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 14:15, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I don't think I understand the argument you're making. The list of singles is a list of all of her singles, regardless of whether they charted, appeared on an album, or if they are covers. To remove remove those songs would be to present an incomplete picture of her full discography.Gagaluv1 (talk) 01:38, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gagaluv1: Wikipedia is not a directory , just because it exists doesn't mean that it should be included. An incomplete discography that focuses on her known work is better than a list of songs that have no individual merit. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 05:49, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to add that I have no problem with someone making an article for her studio album or extended plays. This way her lesser known songs can be covered better in context. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 13:58, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gagaluv1: Actually per WP:REDLINKS "Red links for subjects that should have articles but do not, are not only acceptable, but needed in the articles. They serve as a clear indication of which articles are in need of creation, and encourage it. Only remove red links if you are certain that Wikipedia should not have an article on that subject." Are you saying that the studio album and extended play shouldn't have articles? - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 14:09, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
While I understand that you can provide policy to back up your decisions, I still disagree with them. I know that Wikipedia is not a database and does not need to (or should) include every possible piece of information out there. If the singles section was overly long compared to the rest of the article, I could understand needing to trim it or spin off the discography as a whole, but I just don't consider it obtrusive. If it does no harm to keep them why remove them?Gagaluv1 (talk) 01:34, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gagaluv1: Because it sets a precedent that dictates that literally anything can go into the article. It also has to do with a listing criteria hence "Criteria for inclusion should factor in encyclopedic and topical relevance, not just verifiable existence." Would you argue that we really need to include (for example) a cover song done by Black that is just covered by a YouTube video link? - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 21:50, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar edit

[edit]

Under "Early Life", the sentence "Black dropped out in favor of homeschooling, citing both a need to focus on her career" doesn't need the word "both", unless I'm missing something. Steveneuestefan (talk) 14:18, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done. If you had used the {{edit semi-protected}} template, this request might have gotten attention sooner. ~Anachronist (talk) 23:18, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request 3 Jan 2025

[edit]

Under "Singles", the single heart2 is misattributed to "urmu" - the artist is umru, and the spelling should be corrected to reflect that: https://umru.bandcamp.com/track/heart2

Done A google search suggests the all-lowercase spelling is the usual stylization. Also removed the incorrect wikilink. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 21:34, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Notability as songwriter

[edit]

I see that a previous edit describing her as a songwriter was reverted for a lack of notability (MOS:ROLEBIO). However, several sources used by the article either explicitly refer to her as such or point out her writing her own songs.

  • NME describes her as a "singer-songwriter" in multiple articles: 1, 2, 3
  • Tubefilter intro states: "...for her new album, Black is penning her own lyrics. She has a writing credit on all of Let Her Burn‘s tracks."
  • Allmusic biography describes her as a "singer and songwriter"
  • GRAMMY.com describes her as a "singer/songwriter"
  • BroadwayWorld introduces her as "internet queen, singer and songwriter"

Other sources follow this pattern: Rolling Stone, People, HuffPost

With this, I've added songwriter back in as an occupation. Tumthe3 (talk) 23:38, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
