Fair use rationale for Image:Krcw 10pm news.JPG

[edit]

Image:Krcw 10pm news.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

KRCW switched over to digital?

[edit]

I can't receive KRCW anymore. Have they switched over to digital, because through cable I can get it just fine. I thought they weren't switching until June 12. Are they having problems? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.20.250.225 (talk) 02:09, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The two stations share studios in the basement of the KOIN Center skyscraper on Southwest Columbia Street in downtown Portland; KRCW-TV's transmitter is located in the Sylvan-Highlands neighborhood of the city: Not supported by the body

Hi @Sammi Brie, I am happy with all your other improvements/justifications. However this is just original research? IAWW (talk) 13:43, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@It is a wonderful world Finally figured this one out. There are two legal documents, one from January and one from March 2020, between which the main studio changed. This also aligns with when things might have moved after the Tribune purchase. And I added a photo of KOIN Tower. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 01:01, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great work, thanks for digging up the legal documents. The image of the KOIN tower looks like it is built out of lego lol IAWW (talk) 12:10, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

KUTF and KEBN: Construction

it proposed to erect a tower in the Eola Hills northwest of Salem and broadcast a family-friendly format with possible network affiliation but faced opposition from aviation officials to the site over impacts to nearby McNary Field: Punctuate so it can be read easier

Meanwhile, Willamette Valley Broadcasting was also attempting to firm up financing for the venture... By 1986, the permit was held by Dove Broadcasting: No sourcing on the sale?

  • There isn't any in the papers. FCC records indicate Dove became a minority general partner at this time. (Newspapers.com search is flaky right now, too. Holiday weekends and their servers don't always mesh.)

At the time, Salem's existing commercial station, KECH-TV (channel 22), aired the founders' daily Nite Line Christian program: I originally read this as "the founders'" referring to the founders of KECH-TV and was confused why this was relevant. Could you clarify that "the founders" refers to the founders of the new station?

Dove had hoped for a mid-1987 start, but its plans were delayed two years for various reasons. First, the transmitter site was changed again to improve the coverage area. Other problems and tight finances further delayed construction...: This starts out as a list, but then the structure changes for the other items that would have been in the list. This means it's unclear whether "further delayed construction" is in addition to the two year delays mentioned earlier. I think this paragraph would be a lot clearer if the rest of the reasons were part of the list of reasons introduced with "First".

The new transmitter site, 15 miles (24 km) from Molalla, was the subject of thefts; a 20-year-old transmitter purchased from a TV station in San Francisco was found to be defective and needed a total rebuild: The semi-colon structure makes the reader expect you will further elaborate on the thefts in the post-semi-colon clause, but this is not done. Therefore the semi-colon shouldn't be used in this construction.

  • in this case, it's being used because there are list items with a comma.

Channel 32, Inc: Was Channel 32, Inc a new company set up to run the station? If so, and if there is a source for it, I think this should be stated explicitly.

Tribune ownership

[edit]

ACME sold KWBP: Shouldn't it be "sold it's share of KWPB"? Since it owned an 80 percent share rather than the whole station?

  • It sounds like they ended up owning all of it. But there is no sourcing.

Technical information

[edit]

The "Translators" subsection needs a citation.

  • Going to object because this is basically a pointer "look elsewhere". Translators for stations in 3.0 service are funky for two reasons. One, existing translator equipment has to be replaced, and this is not entirely feasible. Two, if there's a group of translators, the other stations which are carrying the subchannels spread out on the other stations (32 rides on the back of 2 and 6 to reach most viewers right now) are likely to be rebroadcast there too. Entries in databases are thus less reliable for a 3.0 station, up to and including KJZZ-TV Salt Lake City (in the market with the most translators necessary in the country). More common is that translators used previously for KRCW are now used to broadcast other services.

  • More quality work courtesy of Sammi Brie. All seems to be in order. The only qualm I have is with the precision of hook. Perhaps more correctly, the hook should indicate that the two-to-four-week off-air time was only planned. Otherwise, good work and looks like it'll easily pass. All looks in order regarding copyright, length, sourcing, etc. ALT1 meets criteria and is definitely interesting. Good to go! ~ Pbritti (talk) 22:14, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Translators

[edit]

This is kind of an unknowable section which is a bit strange. The reason it is uncited is because no source is going to spell it out very easily.

Translators typically work by rebroadcasting an entire multiplex (6 MHz of space), so all the channels on it. Think of it as a lunchbox. Once upon a time, the lunchbox had one item in it. Now, there are four or five thanks to digital subchannels. ATSC 3.0 hosting arrangements rely on this to create new-format service without removing the channel from existing sets.

When a station converts to ATSC 3.0, the translator equipment in use can't handle the new signal. The equipment needed for 3.0 rebroadcasting is typically greater than 1.0 rebroadcasting. I only know of one operating 3.0 translator, in Taos, New Mexico. It just went into service in April. In any event, it doesn't matter because the translator association or station group often has a translator at the same site for the ATSC 1.0 host station. Instead of 32.1 coming in the lunchbox labeled "32", now 32.1 is packed away in the lunchbox that carries 2.1, 2.2, etc.

A 3.0 conversion makes lists of translators highly inaccurate for this reason. In some cases, we know the translator has been switched to some other station. In others, we don't. But we know that, except in Taos, it is not rebroadcasting KRCW directly.

KRCW had two translators listed for it in 2025, one of which apparently switched to KOIN and the other has no current information. There is a large hidden comment about this.

The only correct thing to do is point to the lists of translators of KRCW's ATSC 1.0 hosts, KATU and KOIN. Those aren't affected.
