Writing credits

[edit]

I have my copy of the UK pressing of Impossible Princess (titled 'Kylie Minogue') on hand here and I'm reading the liner notes. It says that all lyrics on the album were written solo by Kylie, except for I Don't Need Anyone. Since the tracklist cites the liner notes explicitly, I thought that it should actually use the information from them.

Additional information: all lyrics by Kylie Minogue except 'I don't need anyone' (Kylie Minogue/Nick Jones). All vocals by Kylie Minogue. Tracks 5, 10, 11 recorded at Dave and Ingo's Place, Sarm (West) and Mayfair Studios. PHShanghai | they/them (talk) 16:23, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll shortly be reverting this edit by @PHShanghai: PHShanghai, you effectively removed the majority (10 out of 12 songs) of musical writing credits on this album with that edit. Songs are written by more than just their lyricists. With no music, the words are just poetry on a piece of paper. I note that the CD liner notes do say Kylie Minogue wrote the lyrics to all but one song, but check the blue paragraph of text beside each lyric, where the people who wrote each one are clearly stated. The information that's been here for years was correct. Please take care when modifying writing credits to ensure your edit is accurate. Wasn't so much a revert but a rewrite. I've re-added the writing credits but kept your note about Kylie writing almost all the lyrics. Would be helpful if the liner notes contained individual musical composition credits in addition to the lyrical writing ones, but those don't seem to be available. I don't mind this improvement @Homeostasis07:, but since I'm not as well versed with tables and the complexity of them, would you consider remaking/rewriting the format to something like Eternal Sunshine (album), where Lyrics and Music are separated properly in the table? I don't know how the editors at Ariana's page managed to do it but it's what I was trying to do here by adding Kylie as the sole lyricist for this album PHShanghai | they/them (talk) 08:57, 4 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi PHShanghai. I'd have no problem doing this later on laptop (too awkward to do on mobile). The problem is that there aren't individual music writing credits in the album liner notes. It says lyrics are written by Kylie, but it doesn't say "Music by Minogue/Bradfield". So with "Some Kind of Bliss", for example, would I include Kylie as the lyricist and then Bradfield as the musical composer? Or should I include Minogue as the lyricist and Minogue and Bradfield as the musical composers? Kind regards, Homeostasis07 (talk/contributions) 15:15, 4 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Homeostasis07: I would say the latter, Kylie as the lyricist and also as an additional musical composer, since the prose in #Recording and development mentions that she also came up with the melodies for the songs so that would definitely count as a musical composition in addition to lyrical composition. We should support the article text with the track list. PHShanghai | they/them (talk) 04:32, 5 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'd not read the entire article, to be honest, so didn't realize the Recording and development section confirmed musical writing credits of the original album. I've added Kylie Minogue as a musical writer on every song, except "Through the Years", because the text "Minogue wrote the lyrics to 'Through the Years' within 10 minutes of hearing Ball and Vauk's track" seems to indicate that she wrote the lyric to their previously created backing track. Let me know if you agree or not, or feel free to edit the article yourself to add Kylie's name there if you feel it's appropriate.
I've also not modified the content of the bonus tracks/bonus disc, as the composition of those songs is not mentioned in Recording and development. Even the producer of "This Girl" is uncredited, so I didn't feel confident changing those. I tried sourcing the producer of "This Girl" from the credits of Hits +, to no avail. The song's producer isn't credited there either. Maybe no producer is listed because it's a live-in-studio recording? I just don't feel confident enough modifying the credits to the bonus material.
