Q1: Is that Mike Vining in the picture of Delta leading Schwartzkopf's personal security detail?
A1: No. That is William F. Cronin III, who is commonly misidentified as Vining. |
Rumor has it: 24 STS; the Unit.
[edit]Just want to understand and have these items clarified.
1) Never heard that the 24th STS was tier 1. There needs to be a better citation for this. The article referenced uses the word "Secretive" when it could have used the term "unheard of."
2) Also, I understood that The Unit referred to the Secret Army of the North, once called Centra Spike. I have always understood that Delta and the Secret Army of the North are different.
Thank you.

- Your information is indeed mistaken.
- 1. 24th STS has always been a special missions unit, i.e. "Tier 1" -- it is the only (ground) portion of AFSOC that is such. [1] [2].
- 2. The "Secret Army of the North" I have no idea what that is. You are probably referring to the "Army of Northern Virginia", which was once codenamed CENTRA SPIKE, and is currently known as the Intelligence Support Activity. It is also part of JSOC, but is a distinctly different SMU and not the same thing as Delta (though its origins are somewhat intertwined with Delta).⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 22:36, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
- OK. Under the nicknames for CAG this article has "the unit." Just yesterday, I overheard that the Ranger Regiment was just re-classified as tier one…//
- 20 years ago both the 23 and 24 STS were garrison/housed @ JSOC; but it seems like most of the famous Afghanistan missions were when STS individuals were inserted with others teams, like Chapman. ::: HillbillyWoman (talk) 16:49, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- "The Unit" is a common nickname for Delta, correct. Ranger Regiment is not "reclassified as tier one." The Regimental Reconnaissance Company is an SMU like CAG, DEVGRU, etc; the 75th Ranger Regiment as a whole is not. To my knowledge, 23rd STS was not and has never been organized under JSOC. Wherever you're getting your information from seems to be outdated or inaccurate. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 00:15, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Training supported by invalid source
[edit]there is a section in training that is supported by an invalid source. that reference only confirms the use of live ammunition. it makes no reference to replacing "hostages" with other students and then using live ammunition on them, which is what the sentence seems to be inferring.
"The students then go back to the shoot house and the "hostages" are replaced with other students and Delta Force members. Live ammunition is known to have been used in these exercises, to test the students, and build trust between one another.[38]" Jimith1 (talk) 08:10, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
The Unit is not named 3rd Operational Support Group
[edit]3rd Operational Support Group is where they put people that they "dont like" per say. For example when you come to a squadron you're a strap which is kind of your probationary period if they like you you'll be kept but if you don't really mix well with the team they move you to Combat Support Squadron or 3rd Operational Support Group. Operational Support Group is more or less state side actors from what I've seen. In the video that surfaced on youtube of A Squadron doing Hostage Rescue CQB training those people in the house most likely were OSG ~2026-13725-85 (talk) 15:43, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- The article does not say that it is named 3rd OSG; and 3rd OSG is not even a little bit what you're describing. Just because you've watched some random vetbro make stuff up on a podcast does not mean that it's accurate.⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 17:18, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- I should've worded it different I wasn't saying that's what the article said. I was referencing the section of the article where they talk about the possible renaming. While OSG might not be what I'm referencing but I know it's not the unit itself sorry for coming off as hostile if I did ~2026-13648-73 (talk) 03:19, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
- I also was thinking of something completely different 3rd OSG is admin from what I've heard. ~2026-13648-73 (talk) 03:23, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
