Yellow warbler

The yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia) is a species of bird in the New World warbler family, Parulidae. It is the most widespread species in the diverse genus Setophaga, breeding in almost the whole of North America, the Caribbean, as well as northern South America. It has 35 subspecies, residing in various different habitats. Depending on the subspecies, the yellow warbler may be between 10 and 18 centimetres (3.9 and 7.1 in) long, with a wingspan from 16 to 22 centimetres (6.3 to 8.7 in). It weighs 7 to 25 grams (0.2–0.9 oz). In winter, female and immature birds all have similarly greenish-yellow uppersides and are a duller yellow below, while males acquire breast and sometimes head coloration. This yellow warbler was photographed in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in New York City, United States.

@Aa77zz: Can you review the recent sci/common name change here, and the corresponding change made by the user on the genus article? - UtherSRG (talk) 15:46, 5 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@UtherSRG: It is a mess at the moment. I'll take a look. - Aa77zz (talk) 11:02, 6 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Aa77zz @UtherSRG nice to see this long-overdue split done at last! 14 years now since IOC split them. The page name should however be American Yellow Warbler, per IOC and Avilist; and S. petechia as Mangrove Warbler. Of engvar, the former looks to be at (mainly) Canadian English and started so in its early history; probably a good idea to add a tag saying so, but given also wide occurrence in USA, it would make good sense to maximise MOS:COMMONALITY, with e.g. 'accepted' rather than 'recognis/zed', etc. Mangrove W should be at British English, per MOS:TIES with occurrence in several Commonwealth states in the Caribbean - MPF (talk) 16:21, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF and UtherSRG: I used the Clements/ebird names (Northern yellow warbler and mangrove yellow warbler) based on the rational presented on this page that I liked. Note also that IUCN/BirdLife use American Yellow Warbler for the unsplit species so there is possible confusion. (I was secretly hoping that AviList in their 2026 release would adopt the Clements names.) But I agree it was mistake on my part to use the Clements names and we should instead keep to the names used by AviList: American yellow warbler and Mangrove warbler. I cannot move/rename the pages myself. - Aa77zz (talk) 19:27, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Aa77zz thanks! I can see their reasoning, but am not greatly convinced; they for starters are ignoring the established usage set by IOC's split 14 years ago, and also seem to be hinting at wanting to find an excuse to use their execrable grammatic monstrosities of hyphen followed by a capital. @UtherSRG can you move the pages to the IOC names?
As an aside, I've reassigned the two pages to the correct wikidata items - MPF (talk) 21:55, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm no longer an admin and both destinations have an edit, so no, I can't perform the move. I'll list them at WP:RMTM. - UtherSRG (talk) 23:50, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
And now that's done. :) - UtherSRG (talk) 00:28, 13 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! - MPF (talk) 01:31, 13 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - that was efficient. I've cleaned up the articles after the moves. - Aa77zz (talk) 06:10, 13 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

just my opinion, but I'm perplexed as to why it was swapped out. Pdanese (talk) 12:30, 7 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Pdanese Agree the old one was better (sharper focus), though a slight disadvantage that it faces out of the page. Both are nominate S. a. aestiva so no reason there to prefer one over the other - MPF (talk) 16:27, 12 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
