Stating the fort was controlled by the Union Army shows Southern bias. It was a US Army installation and federal, not state lands. They were not occupying South Carolina, nor threatening the people there. It was an unprevoked attack. In fact, the commander of Fort Sumter was a native of Kentucky, He and his men remained loyal to the United States and were simply doing their duty defending their post.
