Onyeka Ibeⓘ (born 29 September 1971) is a Nigerian-born American abstract expressionist painter.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Onyeka Ibe was born on 29 September 1971 in Anambra State, Nigeria. He was introduced to drawing at an early age by his father, who was also a painter. At the age of 16, he exhibited his work at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Lagos, attracting early recognition for his artistic talent.[2][3]
Ibe studied Fine Arts at the University of Benin, graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and first-class honours. In 1998, he relocated to the United States, where he pursued further studies at Georgia State University and Pratt Institute in New York.[4][5]
Career
[edit]Ibe is a Nigerian-born American painter whose work is associated with abstract expressionism. His paintings draw on elements of abstraction, African visual culture, and contemporary artistic traditions. He has exhibited his works in galleries and exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and Africa.[6][7]
In 2006, Ibe received the Best Solo Artist of the Year award at International Artexpo New York. The following year, he was featured by Art Business News among selected contemporary artists.[8]
His works have been displayed in galleries and collections in North America and Europe, and have appeared in public and private collections internationally.[9][10]
Personal life
[edit]Ibe was born on 29 September 1971. He was born not long after the end of the Nigerian Civil War and grew up in a developing democracy that was abruptly terminated.[11] He has described his father as a major influence, who encouraged him to pursue fine arts from a young age. His art style and techniques were influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock.[12]
