Mildred /ˈmɪldrəd/ is a feminine given name. It is an Anglo-Saxon name of Old English origin, composed of "mild" ("mild") + "þryð" ("power, strength", also present in the last syllable of the name Audrey), meaning "gentle strength".[1] It reached the rank of the sixth most popular name for baby girls in the United States in 1912 and maintained that popularity through 1920, but then its popularity dropped quickly afterward. It dropped out of the list of 1,000 most common baby girl's names in 1985 and had not returned to the top 1,000 as of 2025.[2] Familiar forms include Milly and Midge.[3]
