Justin Cary (June 21, 1975 – June 18, 2026) was an American musician. He was a longtime bassist of the Christian alternative rock band Sixpence None the Richer.

Sixpence None the Richer was formed in Texas[1] in 1992, and Cary joined the band in 1997.[2] He replaced the band’s former bassist, J.J. Plasencio. He recorded the bands's most famous hits, "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes". "Kiss Me" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. As part of the band, he was nominated for Grammy Award twice: in 1999 for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album and in 2000 for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.[3]

Cary remained a member of Sixpence None the Richer until his death.[4]

Other work

Outside of Sixpence, Cary also performed with bands like Counting Crows and Blue Country,[3] and with Paul Brandt and Lee Brice.[5]

Personal life

Cary was originally from upstate New York. He had lived in Nashville since 1997.[5] Cary was married to Linda.[2]

Death

Cary suffered a serious stroke and was receiving care at Albany Medical Center in New York. He underwent two surgeries and remained in intensive care, where he was placed on a respirator.[6]

He died on June 18, 2026, three days before his 51st birthday.[7]
