[edit]

The Ōtautahi Christchurch monthly meetups are a chance for Wiki people (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, and so on) to get together, get advice, get collaborations started. Everybody's welcome, beginners or experienced.

  • Scoundrel • 375 St Asaph St, Central Christchurch (map)
  • Saturday, 20 June 2026
  • 10 am–midday

Venue

[edit]
Exterior of Scoundrel

Scoundrel is a bar and eatery on St Asaph Street. We will have booked a table under the name "Wikipedia".

  • If driving, St Asaph is a one-way street so you need to approach from Fitzgerald Avenue (to the east).
  • If biking, there are fixed bike hoops just down the road outside Space Academy and ordinary "wheel-bender" racks by the front door of Scoundrel.
  • If taking the bus, most of the east<->west routes go nearby including the 3 and the 80. Otherwise the Bus Interchange is a 15 minute walk away.
  • WiFi password is beans375 for Scoundrel Customers

Attendees

Add your Wikipedia username if you have one. Tip: in Source editing, you can just type asterisk-space-three tildes (* ~~~)

Apologies

What have we been up to?

[edit]

Edit with VisualEditor

  • ChristchurchHistorian: Finished and published Terrace Station Homestead. Started a new article in my sandbox for Canterbury Provincial Council, consolidating information from different articles (such as Canterbury Province and Superintendent (New Zealand)) about their duties, elections, etc.. Let me know if this is worthwhile or not! Uploaded some images to Wikimedia Commons and did some editing redrawing rivers in Canterbury on OpenStreetMap.
  • Giantflightlessbirds: Went to the 50th anniversary of Scorpio Books and ended up making a Wikipedia article and creating Wikidata and Commons; currently negotiating with them to get better photos, and will pitch to Booksellers NZ to do this with all the indie bookshops in NZ. Doing some more uploading with https://clip2commons.toolforge.org/ and will be presenting on it at the Aotearoa meetup. Working on critical minerals citations and startup company wikidata for the MacDiarmid Institute, and the Wikifying a Conference book with Tamsin. Also I'm applying to be an ESEAP Community Connector, so endorsements welcome (I need 30).

Upcoming events

[edit]
  • Giantflightlessbirds will be at the SCANZ conference in Christchurch and presenting on Wikipedia at the NZ Archaeological Association conference in Kaikōura.

Outcomes and tips

[edit]
  • Somerfield Community Centre
New editor Farakamba turned up and was walked through how to create a user page, add a link, and upload a photo of the Somerfield Community Centre to Wikimedia Commons. Was shown WikiShootMe and encouraged to take more photos of their suburb.
