Elita One is a character from the Transformers franchise. Created by script writer Beth Bornstein, she debuted in the episode "The Search for Alpha Trion" of the original Transformers animated series, which first aired on November 12, 1985. Originally depicted as the commander of a group of Autobot guerrilla fighters, most incarnations feature her in a leadership role among the Autobots. Also as per her original appearance as the significant other of Optimus Prime, there is usually a romantic element between the two.

History

[edit]

Creation and development

[edit]
Elita One as she appears in "The Search for Alpha Trion".

In the first year of the Transformers brand, Hasbro rejected the notion of female Transformers. While working on the script for The Transformers: The Movie in late 1984, Ron Friedman successfully insisted on the inclusion of at least one female Transformer, which resulted in Arcee.[8] This paved the way for other female Transformers, with most of those appearing in the animated series debuting in "The Search for Alpha Trion" as a combat unit engaged in guerilla warfare on Cybertron. Beth Bornstein submitted the first draft script, which includes bios for its new characters, on June 28, 1985. It describes Elita One as "the most powerful female Autobot", charismatic, and a "fine leader" deeply respected by her soldiers, while the script itself notes that she has the power of "suspended animation", effectively the power to stop time, is romantically involved with Optimus Prime, and has a father-daughter bond with the eponymous Alpha Trion.[9] As part of the second season, the finalized episode, with character designs by Floro Dery,[10] aired on November 12, 1985 in advance of the movie's 1986 premiere, making Elita One and her team the first female Transformers to appear in any medium.[11]: 032

Although Elita One was originally intended to be a one-shot character, at around the same time as Bornstein worked on the script for "The Search for Alpha Trion", David Wise worked on the script for "War Dawn". It featured Orion Pax, a younger version of Optimus Prime, and included a female companion of his by the name of Ariel. Wise was unaware of Elita One and did not create Ariel with her in mind, but during the editing phase the parallels were noted and Ariel became the younger version of Elita One.[12][13] Ariel's design also was by Floro Dery.[10][14]

Expanded role

[edit]

Following Elita One's debut in 1985, her next significant role occurred as Ariel, the leader of the Omnicons, in Transformers: Superlink in 2004. However, when Superlink was localized as Transformers: Energon in the West, the character was renamed Arcee.[15] For much of the 2000s, Elita was present in minor roles. In Transformers: Animated 2007, she was depicted as the younger form of the Decepticon Blackarachnia[16] and appeared only in flashbacks. Her 2009 Revenge of the Fallen incarnation, meanwhile, was originally announced as "Flareup" at Hasbro's panel during San Diego Comic-Con 2009.[17]

Following the 2004 cancellation of Dreamwave Productions' Transformers: Generation One in which Elita One was set to appear,[18] her next major role occurred when on September 23, 2015 she was added to the cast of The Transformers: Windblade Vol. 2 #7, "The Will of the Few", by IDW Publishing and remained part of the story as one of Cybertron's leading figures until her death Transformers: Unicron #4, "Road's End", released on September 5, 2018. From here, she was included from the first issue on of IDW Publishing's second run, Transformers #1, "The World In Your Eyes Part One", and sported the design of her 2020 War for Cybertron Trilogy toy. This same design was also used for her appearances in the Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy cartoon in 2020.

In 2024, Elita was utilized as one of the main four characters of Transformers One. Director Josh Cooley has said that he wanted to "actually [make] her really important to the development of Orion Pax. Because in certain continuity they're together as a couple and everything."[19]

Name origin

[edit]

The name "Elita One" was conceived to mirror "Optimus Prime", and along with "Alpha Trion", "Ultra Magnus", and "Rodimus Prime" is among the first names modelled after his. While all of these names have gone on to become ranks within the wider fiction, Elita One's name has not and on occasion has been reimagined into a single unit as "Elita-One" or "Elita-1".[20]

Television

[edit]

The Transformers

[edit]

"The Search for Alpha Trion" of The Transformers introduced Elita One as the leader of a six-man team of all-female guerilla soldiers who hadn't boarded the Ark that ultimately took Optimus Prime and his soldiers to Earth. In the four million year since, they continued the fight on Cybertron against Shockwave's army. When a chance came for the teams to reunite, the female Autobots decided that Cybertron was where they were needed while Optimus and his soldiers returned to Earth.[21][11]: 134

"War Dawn" explored Elita One's past alongside Optimus Prime's. Several million years ago, Elita One went by the name Ariel and Orion Pax was her boyfriend. They, alongside their friend Dion, were both shot down by Megatron. They were retrieved by Alpha Trion and rebuilt into warriors that could stand up against the Decepticons.[22][11]: 136

Transformers: Energon

[edit]

In Transformers: Energon, the character known as Arcee in the Western markets is Ariel in the original Japanese version. Introduced in the episode "Survival Instincts", which aired in Japan on June 4, 2004, she was created to be a leader for the Omnicons and is the only Omnicon to have a unique name and body-type. She transformed into a motorcycle.[15]

In the Japanese-exclusive Transformers: Alternity comic and text series, this version of Ariel returned in a human-like synthoid body named Elita Seven. This form, which resembles a human version of the original Elita One, first was used in the comic "Arch-Nemesis!", which was released on June 27, 2009. Following on this, in the Japanese-exclusive "Controverse" comic, published on May 16, 2014, Ariel obtained a Kre-O body she named Elita Five.[23]

Transformers: Animated

[edit]

The character of Blackarachnia, Transformers: Beast Wars, was reimagined as the mutated form of Elita-1, which was expanded on in "Along Came a Spider" on February 16, 2008. Years prior, she, Optimus, and Sentinel went to Archa Seven, where they were attacked by arachnids. While the other two escaped, Elita was presumed dead and left behind, while in truth she had become techno-organic; part machine, part organic. Betrayed and skeptical about her fate if she were to return to Cybertron, she joined the Decepticons in hopes of one day finding a cure for her condition.

Transformers: Robots in Disguise

[edit]

Elita One is mentioned in the episode "Enemy of My Enemy" of Transformers: Robots in Disguise, which premiered on October 29, 2017, as a supporter of Optimus Prime.

Comics

[edit]

Dreamwave Productions

[edit]

In the first reimagining of the Generation 1 portion of Transformers, Elita One and her team from the 1984 animated series were reimagined as Quintesson agents. They were introduced in The Transformers: Generation One Volume 3 #10, "The Route of All Evil", released on December 1, 2004, but as Dreamwave Productions went bankrupt thereafter, the series was cancelled and their story was not expanded upon.[18]

IDW Publishing

[edit]

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

[edit]

In Tales of the Fallen #6, Elita One, Chromia, and Arcee were experimented on by the Decepticon medic Flatline. This caused their sparks to be merged with a mental link as the result. This new ability gave them the means to successfully coordinate an escape. In Rising Storm #4, Elita One was killed by Shockwave.

The Transformers

[edit]

On September 23, 2015, Elita One made her entrance in The Transformers: Windblade Vol. 2 #7, "The Will of the Few", of IDW Publishing's 2005-2018 run. She was the leader of the Transformers that man the Titan ship Carcer, which in truth was the perpetual prison of the primordial Liege Maximo. While on a stop on Cybertron, Windblade unknowingly released him, which forced the Carcerians to stay to deal with the fallout. Elita One showed herself to be a ruthless politician with no regard for life, including her own, as long as her mission was accomplished. This culminated in her sacrificing herself against Unicron in Transformers: Unicron #4, "Road's End", to give the rest of Cybertron a fighting chance.

Films

[edit]

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

[edit]

In the 2009 film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Elita One, Chromia, and Arcee were three sisters who shared one mind, allowing them to attack with extremely precise timing. They shared similar robot and vehicle modes and possessed the same holographic driver. They were present when the Autobots faced off with the Decepticons in Egypt, and were sent with Ironhide as an advance team to recover Sam. Upon finding Sam and Mikaela, several Decepticons attacked, and Arcee and Elita One were killed while Chromia was last seen taking cover from gunfire. Despite this, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have expressed that all three sisters were killed[24] at the behest of director Michael Bay.[25]

Transformers One

[edit]

In the 2024 animated film Transformers One, Elita-1 works as a mining supervisor. During an emergency, she failed to keep Orion Pax and D-16 to the evacuation protocol and was demoted to waste management for the damage the two caused to nearby mining equipment. In an attempt to get back at them, she ended up going along on their quest to find the Matrix of Leadership and in doing so discovered Alpha Trion and learned that the current leader of Cybertron, Sentinel Prime, was a traitor. Alpha Trion gifted her the transformation cog of Alchemist Prime, which allowed her to transform into a three-wheeled motorcycle. In the following fight to overthrow Sentinel Prime, Elita encouraged and supported Orion, who due to the Matrix of Leadership became Optimus Prime and the new leader of Cybertron. For her contributions, he made her a commander.

Video games

[edit]

Merchandise

[edit]

The earliest product bearing Elita One's likeness was a garage kit by MC Axis in 1996. This kit included Elita One's first profile and motto.[29][30] This was followed by a series of redecos until her 2022 toy in the Legacy line-up, which was followed by a redecoed toy version of Ariel in the same line in 2023.[citation needed]

In 2025, Reesee Entertainment added Elita One, as the only female character that year, to their line-up of Transformers merchandise for the Chinese market.[31]
