Five9, Inc. is an American software company that provides cloud-based contact center software.[1] Headquartered in San Ramon, California, the company operates in the (CCaaS) market alongside providers such as NICE, Genesys, and Amazon Web Services.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Five9 was founded in 2001.[4] Before going public, the company raised approximately $71 million through several funding rounds led by investors such as Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Adams Street Partners, Partech International, and SAP Ventures.[5][6] Five9 completed its initial public offering in April 2014, raising $70 million at a valuation of approximately $322 million, and began trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker FIVN.[7][8]

Following the IPO, Five9 pursued a series of acquisitions, including social engagement company SoCoCare in 2013,[9] workforce optimization provider Virtual Observer in 2020,[10] data analytics firm Aceyus in 2023,[11] and sales engagement software company Acqueon in 2024.[12]

Zoom Video Communications announced a definitive agreement to acquire Five9 for approximately $14.7 billion in an all-stock transaction on July 18, 2021.[13] Five9's stockholders voted against the merger, and the two companies terminated the deal by mutual agreement on September 30, 2021.[14][15][16][17][18] Zoom approached Five9 again in December 2023, but the company declined.[19]

By mid-2024, Five9's share price had fallen considerably from its 2021 highs. Activist hedge fund Anson Funds disclosed a stake in the company that July and publicly urged the board to explore a sale.[20][21]

Products and services

[edit]

Five9 develops cloud-based software used by businesses to operate contact centers and manage customer communications. Its platform handles call routing and analytics, and integrates with major customer relationship management systems.[22][23] The company has incorporated AI-powered features, including virtual agents and real-time analytics tools, into its platform.[24]

Management

[edit]

Mike Burkland joined Five9 as chief executive officer in 2008 and led the company through its 2014 IPO. He stepped down in November 2017 after a cancer diagnosis and took on the role of executive chairman.[25] Rowan Trollope replaced him as CEO but departed in October 2022, prompting Burkland to return to the position that November.[26][27]

Burkland announced his retirement in July 2025. Amit Mathradas, who had served in several senior roles at the company, succeeded him as CEO in February 2026.[25][28]

A class action lawsuit was filed against Five9 in 2024 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Brought on behalf of investors who purchased securities between June 4 and August 8, 2024, the complaint alleges that the company made materially false and misleading statements about its business prospects. As of February 2026, the court had denied in part the defendants' motion to dismiss, allowing the case to proceed to discovery.[29][30]
