Vilas Mane (29 June 1954,Satara – 4 February 2020) was an Indian Journalist, Editor, author, columnist, cartoonist, and journalism educator from Maharashtra. He worked in regional journalism in the Satara district and Western Maharashtra for more than three decades. He also taught journalism and mentored journalism students. Through his writing work, he provided mode for various social issues and also mentored many young journalists.

Early Life and Education
[edit]Vilas Mane born on 29 June 1954 in Satara, Maharashtra. His father served in Indian Army and then PSI in Indian Police but passed away in young age. Due to this Mane started working in young age doing small jobs later working in metalising company. Afterwards, He earned his Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) from Shivaji University, Kolhapur and Master of Journalism (MJ) from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth. Later he was awarded an honorary doctorate[1] by Vishwakarma Open University, New Delhi.
Career in Journalism
[edit]Mane's career in journalism spanned nearly 30 years, during which he worked across various media platforms to report on socio-political realities. He hosted current affairs programs on Akashvani Satara (All India Radio) and authored popular columns, including Mukkam Post Powai Naka[2][3] in the district. Over the course of his career, he published more than 1,000 articles and created over 1,000 editorial cartoon concepts. 50 articles of Mukkam Post Powai Naka are compiled in his book Mukkam Post Powainaka.
Editorial Roles
[edit]Mane held several key editorial and administrative positions across prominent media publications, including:
- Contributing journalist and editor for weeklies such as Police Times, Police Vani,Blitz, Aparadh, Khatarnak, and Manoman, and newspapers such as Sanjvat, Aikya, Muktagiri etc.
- Edition Editor and Bureau Manager[2][4] of the Satara edition of Dainik Pudhari[5] Newspaper, serving in this capacity for 16 years.
- Founder and Founder Editor of Manomay News.[6]
Literary and Educational Contributions

As an author, he penned books reflecting social realities and human values, including Vilasika[7][8], Mandavzhala, Mukkam Post Powai Naka, and Sokshamoksha. According to publication records his book Sokshamoksha was published by Lokvrat Prakashan.[9] Dedicated to media education, he spent nearly three decades as a lecturer, mentoring and shaping the careers of generations of young journalism students in the region. He had mentored about 250+ students[6] of Journalism in satara district. He started the nirbhid journalsim in the district.[2][10]
Awards and Recognition

For his contributions to journalism, literature, and the arts, Mane was honored with more than 45 awards from the state government and various socio-cultural organizations.
One of important honour of his career was the Acharya Balshastri Jambhekar Darpan Award, considered a highly respected honor in Marathi journalism that recognizes works done by journalists. He received this honor from the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Manohar Joshi[11]. His professional legacy within the regional press has been recognized alongside fellow senior laureates of the Pudhari corporate family.[12] Mane was awarded Patraratna Puraskar by Sambhaji Raje Chhattrapti of Kolhapur.
Social Impact and Death
[edit]During his career, Mane interacted with political, social, and cultural figures through his journalistic and editorial work. He guided many politicians, businessmans, social organizations. He used the press media to voice critical community issues, starting the fearless journalism in the district and made efforts for independency of journalism. He remains a journalist as inspiration[10] for newspapers, digital news platforms such as Manomay News in the region.[6] Vilas Mane passed away on 4 February 2020.[3]
