UPES, formerly known as the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, is a private university located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. It was established in 2003.[1] The university is listed by the University Grants Commission among recognised universities in India.[2] It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in areas such as engineering, computer science, business, law, design, health sciences and energy studies.[1]

History

UPES was established in 2003 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.[1] The university was initially known for programmes related to petroleum and energy, and later added programmes in other areas such as law, business, design and computer science.[1]

In 2019, Laureate Education completed a transaction involving its India network institutions. A regulatory filing by Laureate Education stated that Global University Systems India Bidco B.V. was the purchaser in the transaction and identified UPES among Laureate's India network institutions.[3]

The university is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.[1] QS lists UPES with its main campus at Energy Acres, Dehradun.[4]

Academics

UPES offers programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. Its programmes cover areas such as engineering, computer science, business, law, design, health sciences and energy studies.[1]

The university's School of Law offers integrated and postgraduate law programmes. In 2023, The Financial Express reported that the school had introduced legal education in areas including data privacy, cybersecurity, blockchain, drone laws and emerging technology regulation.[5]

In 2025, ET LegalWorld reported that UPES and The University of Law in the United Kingdom had partnered to establish a Centre of Excellence at UPES focused on education and research in artificial intelligence and ethics.[6]

The Indian Express has noted UPES among institutions offering postgraduate programmes in oil and gas management and energy trading.[7]

Recognition and rankings

UPES is listed by the University Grants Commission among recognised universities in India.[2]

In the National Institutional Ranking Framework rankings for 2025, UPES was ranked 43rd in the engineering category.[8]

Times Higher Education listed UPES in the 501–600 band in the World University Rankings 2026.[1] QS listed UPES in the 901–950 band in the QS World University Rankings 2026.[4]

Student achievement

In 2017, The Hindu reported that a team of students from UPES won a global aerospace contest in the United States.[9]
